Biography

Led by singer-songwriter and guitarist Paul Weller, The Jam were a commercially successful and critically acclaimed British new wave band of the late 70s/early 80s. They had 18 consecutive singles in the Top 40 of the UK charts, and their 'mod' image led to a minor revival of the subcultural style.

The group formed in 1972 and underwent several stylistic changes before releasing their debut single… Read more in Amazon's The Jam Store

Editorial Reviews

In the days before reissue specialist labels and so-called Catalog Development departments at major record companies, 'best of' albums were just another duty for the record company staff. More often than not, greatest hits albums were lackluster slap-dash affairs that came and went. A rare few rose above and took a life of their own: Bob Marley Legend. Steve Miller Band Greatest Hits. Squeeze Singles - 45s and Under. Long overlooked for that list is The Jam's Snap! An expertly assembled double-album collection of all of the band's single A-sides with select B-sides, album tracks and rarities, Snap! was a fitting summation of Britain's biggest band at the time. As a bonus, the album's first British pressing came with a free 4-song EP from The Jam's farewell concert at London's Wembley Arena in December 1982. As the world rushed to adopt the new CD format in the mid-1980s, Snap! was gutted to a strict singles collection. A shadow of its former self, Snap! withered, replaced by subsequent retrospectives. 21 years on, Hip-O Select proudly reissues the original Snap!: The full 29 song track list, including the four UK #1s -- "Going Underground," "Start!,""Town Called Malice" and "Beat Surrender" -- fan favorite b-sides and album tracks, including "The Butterfly Collector," "English Rose," "Thick As Thieves" and "Tales From The Riverbank"; plus the exclusive remix of "Funeral Pyre" and the "That's Entertainment" demo. Also included -- for the first time on CD -- is the rare Live! EP: "Move On Up," "Get Yourself Together," "The Great Depression" and "But I'm Different Now." The original packaging -- from the custom inner sleeves to Paolo Hewitt's liner notes -- has been restored, augmented by lyrics to each song. The renewed Snap! is a brilliant reminder of why The Jam are among Britain's most revered and beloved bands.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Jam Album, January 26, 2006
By
Dee Sharp "Cruzanson" (Long Beach, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Snap (Audio CD)
I owed this album on vinyl (still do, in fact) and played the daylights out of it. It was the soundtrack to my angst filled teens. And the editorial review above is spot-on: I bought the original CD, which had about 25% of the songs trimmed away, robbing the record of its soul.

This is a welcome return for the record. It is a brilliant overview of the group, capturing the band's fire as a unit and Paul Weller's skill as a composer.

The artwork faithfully restores the original LP art while beautifully augmenting it with lyrics and 7" single & LP covers (which, for fear of overreminiscing, I had on a Snap T-shirt I bought in London in '84).

The coup de grace that makes this superior to all the other Jam retrospectives is the inclusion (finally!) of the Live ep, which, to these ears, is the best live recording of The Jam available.

This is a magnificent piece for the long time fan, and a well worthwhile purchase for the novice looking to understand why Paul Weller is called The Modfather and The Godfather of Britpop, and why The Jam is one of the best bands England ever produced.

5.0 out of 5 stars Snappy collection of essential tunes, May 8, 2006
This review is from: Snap (Audio CD)
Paul Weller is often seen as Daddy Britpop. Maybe even more than the Beatles, he was the main influence behind the Britpop revival in the nineties. Bands as Oasis, Supergrass and the Verve all got to pay their dues to Mister Weller and it all started with the Jam.

The Jam rose to legendary status during the dawn of Punk rock. Although they never sounded as raw as the Sex Pistols or the Clash they are considered to be one of the greatest bands of that generation. Their sound is deeply indebted to Northern Soul, Funky and thrilling. Their songs were Snappy pop gems, pure working-class poetry. Unlike other Punk Rockers, their image was pristine, with cool sharp cut suits or expensive leisure wear. They were almost a movement on their own within the Punk scene.

Snap was originally released as a double vinyl (remember those) and then comprised to a single disc. Because not everything of the original vinyl release fitted on a single disc eight tunes were cut form the release. The bonus EP that came with the original release disappeared all together. For decades fans had to make do with either the complete discography on disc or lacking compilations. This atrocity is finally set right with the re-release on disc of Snap in it original form, including the EP and a beautiful booklet. This truly is a must have for anyone interested in British music and an essential for any Punk Rock fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing music in an amazing package!, December 21, 2009
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Snap (Audio CD)
This will be brief.
The Jam's hits package Snap! was an incredible overview of the band. The truncated CD release Compact Snap was a far cry from the original.
This new limited edition package is gorgeous. The restored live EP is a very nice bonus.
If you love The Jam, this is a no-brainer.
5-stars for the music. 5 stars for the packaging.
