When I first started reading this book I assumed it was for business people, only. After reading a few chapters, however, I've changed my mind.
Author Patti Wood has written a book that can be helpful to business people and non-business people alike. What is important or disastrous while communicating during a business meeting can be just as important or disastrous in a social situation. The book explains how loudly our body language speaks and in some cases may betray us. It explains the phenomenon of first-impressions. Yes, they are important, but first impressions can be changed, although it takes time.
Under the subject of first impressions the four first impression factors are listed and explained: Credibility, likability, attractiveness, and power. The author states, "To understand how people use nonverbal behavior to make snap impressions, you need to understand these four crucial primary factors." And, she is right.
Something I learned from this book that I hadn't considered before is that a movement or gesture I may make, thinking I'm doing the right thing, could mean something else entirely to another person. We really do need to understand how we appear to others.
Wood takes several pages to discuss touching people and how to do it correctly and when and where touching is appropriate. "Touch is an essential element in our development and health, and a powerful way of communicating," Wood says. I'm not comfortable touching people, especially due to our society's hyper sensitivity to touching. I think this form of communicating must be left up to the individual, but having the insight from someone who is a professional in the field of communication is very helpful.
I would recommend this book to any and all who want to understand body language and the part it plays in communicating. The book offers valuable information in an interesting way.

Snap by Patti Wood is all about first impressions and why they are so important, and often very hard to change. Think about the first time you met someone that you liked right away, or instantly disliked very strongly. What were they doing? How did they treat you? What were they wearing? Where were they standing or sitting while talking to you? All of these things (and many more) make up our first impressions. Find out why they affect us so quickly and have such a lasting impact in this book.

Snap is a very interesting book. I can remember many occasions where I met someone and felt an instant connection with. I can also remember many people I've met over the years that I never wanted to see again, and strongly disliked upon first meeting them. Many of these snap judgments based on first impressions worked out well for me, and possibly saved me from danger a few times.

Reading through this book showed me that some of those bad impressions were possibly just caused by a bad day the person was having, or their own insecurities when meeting someone new. Maybe I also gave them a bad first impression. We can't go back and change that snap judgment, but we can always work towards fixing it, if it is important to us to do so. It will take time, but it can be done.

This is a very well written and easy to read book. You can use it to make sure that your first impression is as good as you can make it. You can also use it to decipher the hidden clues behind why you instantly like or dislike someone you just met. I highly recommend it.

First impressions are highly accurate. And, we can be deceived--both by the person we are sizing up and by our own biases. Patti Wood, coach and corporate "body language expert" has comprehensively studied and mapped the way our physiology both communicates and perceives first impressions. Citing brain research, Wood says that when we first meet someone we are non-verbally sorting for likeability, trustworthiness, competence, and aggressiveness, and we do this so quickly that we size someone up in about 1/10th of a second--in a snap! Without even realizing it, we are taking stock of their eye contact, facial expressions, body language, gestures, greetings, and can even do this to some degree virtually, via online and electronic introductions. The good news is that we can change the first impression we make on others; the not-so-good news is that it can take up to six months of constant interaction to shift an incorrect opinion or perception. She calls this the "primacy effect:" that first impressions affect all future thoughts about the person--and are inexorably linked to survival instincts.

Although the context for her research and observations is primarily the workplace, Wood's insights of human behavior are relevant to most socially interactive situations. What works well in this book is the depth of study and range of tips offered for understanding and improving the first impression we have on others. For example, she devotes an entire section to the handshake, including its history, cultural differences, body language, alternatives greetings, appropriateness in different situations, and so forth.
