3.0 out of 5 stars And You Thought Life "In the Bigs" was Easy, July 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Snap Me Perfect!: The Darrell Porter Story (Hardcover)
Porter takes the reader through a hellacious sequence of events that affected his life. He documents how a first single beer led a downward spiral into serious drug and alcohol abuse. After hitting near bottom, Porter turned around his life to become MVP of the World Series for the Cardinals. Read how Porter still struggles to stay sober and grow into the person he desparately wishes to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Knowing Darrell - my friend, October 9, 2011
This review is from: Snap Me Perfect!: The Darrell Porter Story (Hardcover)
I knew Darrell. We played against each other in high school. He was a spectacular athelete; could do anything on the baseball field, basketball court and football field. He had a full ride offer from the University of Oklahoma to be their quarterback but as we all know, turned it down to play pro baseball. Bear Bryant, who also recruited Darrell, said that he hadn't seen anyone throw the football as well as he did since Joe Nameth. After becoming very good friends with one of his younger brothers, I really got to know Darrell personally. This was while he was playing for the Royals and he invited me and some of his friends to his house in KC for a visit. It's a time I will never forget - a highlight of my life. I got a taste of what it was like living the pro athelete's life. I could tell a lot of stories, but let's just say - it's amazing. Darrell would do anything for you. He was just a great friend. His book describes a part of his life he for the most part kept from me. He knew I didn't party or drink or do drugs and he tried to hide it from me. I knew, though there were serious things going on in his life. I told him I would pray always for him. And I think that really got to him. Just before I left his home in KC he gave me a Bible presented to him at the 1978 Allstar game and signed it. It is of course, one of my most cherished items. I say all this only to try and convey what a generous great person he was. I only wish more people could've known him. When his brother called me to tell me of his passing...we both just sat there and cried - in total shock. Life in his family really revolved around him and it of course hurt them all very much when he passed from this life. But, I know someday I'll get so see him again because we are brothers in Christ. I'm an only child and always wanted a brother. The Porter's and especially Darrell made me feel like one of their brothers. We don't get to see each other now hardly at all, but I feel I do have brothers out there now. Get this book and let it inspire you - and hopefully my words have added a little more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, Honest Man, August 8, 2002
By
"keeb69" (St. Louis, MO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Snap Me Perfect!: The Darrell Porter Story (Hardcover)
I bought this book when it was first published because Darrell Porter was my favorite athlete when I was 12. As I read it, Darrell Porter became one of my favorite people -- though I never had the good fortune to meet him. And, sadly, I never will. Mr. Porter died on August 6, 2002.

His decision to seek help for his alcohol and drug addiction was absolutely courageous. Going to rehab was not yet the trendy thing for a celebrity to do; his was a life-saving, life-changing decision, and he took it seriously.

Having his story published to share with all the world was also courageous. His story takes the reader all the way to the nadir of his addiction -- paranoid thinking, long lapses in memory, and violent behavior. I was both shocked and inspired.

Though today's generation of teens may not have ever heard of Darrell Porter, his story should be required reading in the anti-drug education of our children. Some (like myself) may find the "God talk" a bit boring, but the book is very inspiring even if you put all that aside -- the frightening effects of his drug abuse and his brave fight to recover his life made a huge impact upon my life.
