Editorial Reviews

The Strypes is 4-piece rock rhythm and blues band hailing from Cavan, Ireland, formed in 2011 by Ross Farrelly (lead vocals/harmonica), Josh McClorey (lead guitar/vocals), Pete O'Hanlon (bass guitar/harmonica) and Evan Walsh (drums). The group has spent the past 18 months launching their explosive assault on the clubs and festivals of Ireland, the UK and Europe, viciously hammering out a no-nonsense blues repertoire drawing from the songbooks of Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Slim Harpo and more with the passion and venom of British blues groups such as Dr. Feelgood, The Yardbirds, The Rolling Stones and The Animals. Having already been met with critical acclaim from greats such as Jeff Beck, Elton John, Dave Grohl and Paul Weller and been tipped by NME as the No. 1 new band to watch, it seems things can only get better for The Strypes. The US version of their debut LP Snapshot includes a never-before released track "I Don't Want To Know", produced by legendary guitarist and songwriter Paul Weller.

Whenever I hear a great rocking song on classic hits radio I wonder "Why don't bands make songs like this any more?" The answer is "They Do!" Snapshot by The Strypes is fantastic, incorporating classic rock music with great lyrics. Reminiscent at times of The Animals, Dr Feelgood and Lew Lewis Reformer, the original songs on Snapshot are as good as any I have heard since, since..., whenever!

Despite the fine covers of songs by Bo Diddley, Willie Dixon, Nick Lowe and Muddy Waters, my favourite songs on the disc are those composed by Josh McClorey and Evan Walsh. These guys are amazing musicians and great singers, imparting just the right amount of grit and growl. My only complaint about Snapshot is there are not enough original songs.

I think this band is great. They are proficient on their instruments, and very professional performers. They have great taste in the songs that are chosen to cover, and their originals are strong as well. This is one of the rare instances when I greatly prefer them live on the various videos I've seen (like Jools Holland, BBC Radio 6, Glastonbury) over this CD. Being produced by Chris Thomas I was expecting a better recording and better mastering. The CD is very much part of the "loudness wars", with mastering that is very fatiguing to listen to. It's a shame, The Strypes deserved better.

If rock 'n' roll doesn't die, you can thank this band. They remind me of The Who, The Stones and countless other bands, but they sound like none of them. They sound like the Strypes. It's their energy, their riffs and the belief that great rock 'n' roll can save your soul. They clearly have a deep understanding of what makes a great song and they're a tight band. I'm sure they don't want the responsibility of being the future of rock 'n' roll, but I believe they're the breath of fresh air rock music needs. And they're sure to inspire other kids to pick up a guitar, bash some drums and make some noise. Stellar. Fun. Great debut.

These youngin's can play! The have plumbed the depths of their parents and grandparents vinyl collections, listening to Beatles, Stones, Yardbirds, then Mudddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Chuck Berry, and Bo Diddley. Then they sped it up and crunched it through early punk and pub influences like the Undertones and Eddie and the Hotrods. This is the most exciting rock and roll release in years, making the 4 piece sound relevant again. GET WITH THE STRYPES.

Aside from the fact that these boys are extremely talented for their age is the fact that they're extremely talented for ANY age! Every song on their debut release is an excellent rocker. I actually prefer their own writing over the cover songs. I can sum them up in this way. My wife always says I compare all music to Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin and if it's not that good I don't like it. Well I love this album and everything else I've heard from these guys. My advice, get the album, get the singles, download all the videos and see them live. None of this will be disappointing to you if you like Rock & Roll!!!

Terrific retro band. The early 60s/mid 60s feel is very, very well done. They are young, talented and focused. Can't wait to see how they develop their craft in the future. If more bands like this were working today contemporary rock would have a very bright future.

The Strypes are destined for success! Their music is upbeat, inspiring, and fun - just like the band. Will be seeing them live tomorrow night at NYC's Bowery Ballroom - looking forward!
