Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Although the inner child is somewhat passe, quaint books to appease it continue to appear. One of the most playful is Carolyn Manzi's Coloring Your Prayers: An Inspirational Coloring Book for Making Dreams Come True. Manzi encourages adults to put their prayers in action, beginning with the visualization that comes with creative activities, such as artwork. While the point that many adults have lost the uninhibited creativity of childhood is well taken, and the book is downright fun, Manzi's path to spiritual growth is too vague to be truly helpful. (Harmony, $17.95 192p ISBN 0-609-60621-2; Sept.) ~ Gift book publisher J. Countryman taps into Americans' fascination with the afterlife in Snapshots of Heaven, an inspirational title from Joyce Vollmer Brown. The art features landscapes and cozy domestic scenes, while Brown's text tells us what we want to hear--for example, we will be reunited with dear friends and family in heaven, our differences elided by an overarching love. Brown's sentiments and examples are strikingly similar to Elizabeth Phelps's 19th-century ruminations on heaven found in the Victorian classics The Gates Ajar and Beyond the Gates. All that's missing is the dog Phelps pictured, curled up on the front porch of one of heaven's tidy domiciles. ($9.99 128p ISBN 0-8499-5654-4; Sept.)

From the Author

I love to think about heaven. Looking forward to my glorious eternal home transforms life here and now. Remembering the joy that is waiting gets me through difficult times. Knowing God uses events in my life to prepare me for heaven gives them meaning. Viewing life with an eternal perspective gives it purpose -- because every act of obedience and service will one day be rewarded many times over.

This book is a result of years of reflecting on (and some days longing for) heaven. I'm very grateful to my editor Terri Gibbs and Gwendolyn Babbitt, a gifted artist, for expressing my thoughts so beautifully.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Book, September 22, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Snapshots of Heaven (Hardcover)
This book is a "must have" in your home. I keep copies in my guest room and on my livingroom sofa table. Most of my guests ask for a copy of the book to take with them. The artwork is lovely and the writing makes us hope that the author has truly had a chance to view Heaven firsthand! You won't regret buying this book!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Snapshots Of Heaven -- Inspiration in 96 pages, April 24, 2002
This review is from: Snapshots of Heaven (Hardcover)
This small book was born out of the meditations of the author during a serious illness when heaven was a very near thought. Perhaps because of this experience, Joyce Brown can give such great thoughtful insight in heaven. Uplifting and encouraging with a touch of the gospel, this little book makes good inspirational reading for anyone that find themselves in the dumps. Makes a great gift. I would make one suggestion. Don't try to read it all at once. It meant to be read slowly so as to give the thoughts enough time to sink in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very well done, October 2, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Snapshots of Heaven (Hardcover)
The perfect book for a person who has lost someone close. It was very comforting and the pictures were beautiful. I especially liked that the illustrations were placed over different views of the sky.
