The synopsis was what hooked me to begin with--well that, and the cute guy on the cover. It seemed to me that Cyclop was talking to someone, or reciting a mantra to drown out the sound of the other. I really wanted to know what happened, and who this person who was so obsessed with him was. The book is a very fast read but it keeps you engaged throughout. When it starts it seems like it's just going to be a book about a teenage boy growing up in a gang while trying to understand his place in the world. However, it jumpstarts quickly. A gang warfare breaks out and Cyclop is forced to choose between his family and his love interest. When he finally starts to get his life back together, he's thrown for another loop. A man from his past resurfaces and he starts to question all that he is. I don't want to spoil the book for you, so suffice it to say, the story continues and we meet people that are similar to him. We get to see as Cyclop fights to be normal, to define what normal even is, and how to break the hold that man has over him.
I really like the fact that it's not a regular YA book. Besides having a male lead, which is rare with the amount of female lead books that dominate the YA genre, Cyclop is bisexual. He struggles with defining his feeling for both of his love interests, especially since being in a gang isn't the most welcoming of places for a possible gay teenage boy, as he thinks of himself at the beginning. When you add in the supernatural elements, it starts to become more complex. Seeing into the future is cliché but I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't going to be another, I see the future so I can change it, book. And while Cyclop does use his power to read people's futures, and he does use it to help his gang family, the book doesn't focus on that. In fact, he doesn't like using his power and does his best not to influence what happens. He learns some tough lessons because of it which results in people close to him dying.
I'd gladly recommend the book to others. If you want to read an atypical YA novel, pick up Snapshots.
