Laugh all the way..,

I first read this book over twenty years ago, and still take it out when I want to cheer myself up. Easy to read and with a cast of small-time crooks who are surprisingly likeable, the book speeds along with twists and turns which the characters breathlessly try to keep up with.
The main character is being blackmailed by a fellow crook, Morland, into kidnapping a rich crook's baby son. For me, Morland is one of the true comic characters of fiction. He is a cross between Rigsby from Rising Damp and Uriah Heep, and no matter how much you want to dislike him, he will manipulate you as much as the other characters into a sense of sympathy. Unsurprisingly the snatch doesn't go quite according to plan, and from then on the characters plot and improvise to try to come out as winners. But gradually their idea of a good outcome is changed, largely due to the influence of the gorgeous red-head Paula. A funny, funny read, that leaves the reader feeling good. What more could you want?
