Clarence Carter's music as documented in this collection is nothing short of amazing. His work stands in the area where the blues and soul music meet, and the results will definitely grab you. His voice is so soulful and expressive and he could really put it across like the old bluesmen were capable of doing. This compilation contains the best of Carter's recordings from 1965-1970 and has too many great songs to mention. If you are a fan of the Allman Brothers Band or Duane Allman, this disc features three songs on which Duane Allman is credited as a session musician. The slide guitar solo Allman plays on "The Road Of Love" sounds as if he will literally tear the roof off the studio and gives me chills every time I hear it. In addition, it is worth noting the two songs on this collection that were also covered by Etta James: "I'd Rather Go Blind" and "Tell Daddy", which was released as "Tell Mama" by James. Overall, this is a really strong collection and while Clarence Carter may not get props like some of the other great soul men do, he should. This collection is the proof.

Of the the many soul artists of the mid-60's, Clarence Carter was underated by many of the northern radio station D.J.'s and program directors. Living in Baltimore at the time Clarence was recording on the 'Fame' label, only 1 station would play his music with any consistancy and that was WANN in Annapolis, Md..
I'm happy to see this album available but miss cuts like;
Funky Fever, Thred the Needle, The Court Room and a few others.
Overall, this album will fill the soul gaps in anyone's collection. Now, if I could only find some original Andre Williams.

This is the TRUE Clarence Carter. Not novelty, but some really amazing and heartfelt songs. You can really feel the emotion come through in this man's music and this is a great sampler of what he can do. Everything from ballads, to old school soul, to party anthems, this is a a wonderful album. Great backing musicians too. Wish somebody was doing music like this now. Artists like Clarence Carter are rare. When you listen to him, you can tell that he's lived it!

I've got to say, I've been less a fan of pure Soul than pure Blues over the past 30 years or so, but when I went looking for a few hits by C.C. that I could think of, this seemed like the best place to start a few years ago. I'm at the point now of replacing that (now lost) compilation, and I CANNOT FIND A BETTER SELECTION to recommend for those just digging into Clarence's treasure mine of music. Between the song selection (check out that hefty track listing!), the production quality (probably the best treatment of his music I've heard), and a fairly reasonable price (in light of economic concerns facing us all), I've already made up my mind. I'm buying this one again.

The same soulful ingredients as a Wilson Pickett,or an Otis Redding,Clarence "Doctor" Carter stands tall on his own,the singer of soul is a songwriter,guitar player,piano player,and possesses a strong rich voice with a unique style of his own. These recordings on "Snatching It Back" are the very best of Carter featuring,"Tell Daddy","Looking For A Fox","The Road Of Love" (with Duane Allman on a thunderous slide guitar),"Slip Away","Dark End Of The Street","Soul Deep","I'd Rather Go Blind","I Can't Leave Your Love alone",and "Patches", all these songs and more make up the Clarence Carter sound - backed by top-notch studio musicians of the era, the sixties and seventies. Here's twenty one tracks of classic soul recorded in Muscle Shoals, ultimately this is Clarence Carter,if you haven't heard this great artist at work you're missing the train,"pure gold" you're bound to wear it out. In the UK he's only known for the execrable "Patches" but Clarence Carter is truly one of soul music's greats. He has a shrewd sense of humour ("I can't see myself" and "I'd rather go blind" are strange song choices for a blind singer) but his writing delivery and SOUL are superb. A must have.

Wow. what a cd. The whole album is full of classic tracks. I play this CD so much. His voice is one of the most amazing that I have ever heard. It blows me away every time I listen to this CD. I wish that he would tour through NY. This CD is a must for anybody who ever remotely likes soul music. Buy this CD. BUY THIS CD NOW!!!!!

Clarence Carter's work for the Atlantic and Fame labels is my favourite soul music. In my opinion his music from the sixties and early seventies is better than that of Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin or any other southern soul man or woman. I feel that he was greatly under-rated during that era. He had a great voice, catchy tunes, and beautiful horn and guitar work. Many of Carter's greatest songs from that period are on this particular album, and I think that it is a must-have. For those to whom Clarence Carter is new, I advise them to get the following albums as well: This is Clarence Carter, The Dynamic Clarence Carter, Patches, Testifyin', Sixty Minutes with Clarence Carter, Heart Full of Song, Loneliness and Temptation, and the original The Best of Clarence Carter.
