4.0 out of 5 stars As an old gamer, I loved it!
Required - Please download the patch to this game. It probably fixed most of the errors people were getting. I played mine on Windows XP, and the patch is essential. I did not test on Windows 7.

Sure, there are better graphics, and the game flaws are numerous, but I found this game to be addictive! Once you get past the first scenario, it's all killing! I was...

I cannot believe Xicat delayed this game several months to have this be the end product. ... First off, the game play and storyline have almost nothing to do with "Sniper" at all (Carlos Hathcock 93 Vietnam confirmed sniper kills, Delta Force, SWAT, etc. anything but this), its more like a "Hitman" wanna be with worse graphics, worse sound and sub-par level design. I had a bad feeling about the game just from looking at the bad box design ... But I thought I would give it a chance, bad move.

The first mission is absolute ... Have to take out 4 cops with an M-14 sniper rifle from street level and of course their handguns shoot acurately from several hundred meters. If there is a way to get to a building top I couldnt find it which would be the logical place to shoot a sniper rifle from in an urban setting. I am not even sure I am going to move on to the next missions. No Multiplayer option either where at least having 2 or more humans involved in some sniper vs. sniper action might have been a little redemption but I can get that in so many other games with better graphics, sound and delivery ...

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid like the plague!!!, October 1, 2002
This review is from: Sniper: Path of Vengeance (CD-ROM)
From their press release, "Xicat predicts that "Sniper: Path of Vengeance" will become the new benchmark in first-person action games." If this is the new benchmark, then Xicat must be predicting that goal posts will be the rage at limbo parties. Sorry folks, but this game is just plain awful. It has more bugs than the Amazon basin. Here is the list I found in the first and only 40 minutes of playing(or waiting on?)it.

When first started up, the monitor will click back and forth. Is this game crashing? Nope, there it goes. Oops, back to the desktop. No wait, it's starting now. Oh, back to the desktop. Get the point?

When the game finally starts, there is no reverse mouse button in the menus. Is this a beta release? Hmmm...it doesn't say so on the box. In all fairness, there is a patch to correct this. Wonder why it wasn't done in the first place?

I started the game to find my "contact". Where could he be? In this building? Oh, you can't go into any buildings. In the water? Oh, you can't go into the water. Hmmm...I thought this was the LITHTECH engine?

I get my assignment and move on. Let me do a save here. That seemed to work ok.

I get killed to test the quick load function. I hit F9 as instructed and the level starts over at the beginning. I load it from my saved games and it takes two minutes to come up. The stupid music is playing again even though I turned it off already.

I get killed again and load my game from the save menu. Now I have no sound. And the stupid music is still turned on. At least I can't hear it.

I finish the first level by going back to my car. Do I get the next level? No. I get the desktop since the game crashed.

Oh well...I did have high hopes for this game. I love camping in Half-Life an Unreal and was looking forward to a game that focused on sniping. I guess I will have to wait some more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst. Game. Ever., October 15, 2002
This review is from: Sniper: Path of Vengeance (CD-ROM)
Ugh. This game is so abhorently, dreadfully awful, it's downright painful to play. I feel stupider for having wasted the 45 minutes it took me to give up on it. There is not a single redeeming feature to speak of. Frankly, I'm stunned that Mirage managed to stay in business after their last lemon of a game, Mortyr. But somehow, this one is even worse. There is no reason to waste your time on this, when there are so many excellent shooters out there. Just this past month Mafia, Hitman 2, and No One Lives Forever 2 came out. All are very good. ... On a side note I feel pity for the unfortunate soul who gave this game 5 stars. He clearly played this game a little too long and suffered brain damage..

1.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, I couldn't give it 0 stars, August 6, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Sniper: Path of Vengeance (CD-ROM)
Graphics: Are something to be desired. Think glitchy blocks for player models who can't move their mouth when they talk. Look at Unreal Tournament made YEARS before this sniper game yet graphics are superior.

Sound: Nothing special.

Gameplay: This is one of those horrible 'set' games. By that, I mean there is no variation in the storyline. No matter what you say in reply to people in this game, they always give the same answer, adding no variation to the storyline. Ending is pretty bad too.

Worth It?: No. If you could download it from the Internet, might not be so bad, but if you are intending to spend any amount of money on this game, you are crazy. I was lucky, because I bought it for $$$ and sold it for $$$.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unremittingly terrible, December 26, 2002

I made the mistake of getting this for Christmas. You don't need to make the same error. This game takes five hours to beat, is senseless, and has a ridiculous amount of bugs. Don't support games of this poor calibre, even if you see them in bargain bins. It's becoming a bit of a yearly habit with me it seems (last year I bought the execrable "Dusk Till Dawn") I play a lot of games, but nowadays, with so many quality games worth playing about, there's simply no reason to endure these lemons.

1.0 out of 5 stars Should be a discount bin game, October 1, 2002

I had a bad feeling about this game when I picked up the box but I ignored my gut feeling. Just goes to show you that you shouldn't doubt yourself. This game has good graphics, but the level design and overall flow of the game is very amateurish at best. When you get to the end of a level the screen freezes, turns purple then you get a loading screen. Needless to say its a very abrupt transition.

Wait for this game to get to the bargan bin before shelling out the money for it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Ready For Primetime, December 25, 2002
This review is from: Sniper: Path of Vengeance (CD-ROM)
Game as released was quirky--and then I noticed that there was a 40mb patch that you had to go to GameSpy Fileplanet to download where you had to wait over an hour just for your turn at the download area to be able to download that monster patch--that is unless you want to subscribe to Fileplanet for $6.95 per month to be able to access a high speed download area (hmmm, that seems curious)So after spending four hours getting the patch....

The graphics are fair, but certainly not the best that's out there. Don't buy this one for children. The language used in the game has been written specifically for adults and lends nothing to the storyline. It seems that XICAT rushed to get this one out by Christmas 2002, because this didn't look like what was orginally promised. If I had to do it again, I would pass on this one.

I agree with the other reviews, except the five star person (He/She must work for XICAT)I completed the game in about 4-5 hrs. I tried to work through the bugs for 5-6 hrs. There are so many bugs in this game the terminex man would be scared.

4.0 out of 5 stars As an old gamer, I loved it!, February 10, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sniper: Path of Vengeance (CD-ROM)
Required - Please download the patch to this game. It probably fixed most of the errors people were getting. I played mine on Windows XP, and the patch is essential. I did not test on Windows 7.

Sure, there are better graphics, and the game flaws are numerous, but I found this game to be addictive! Once you get past the first scenario, it's all killing! I was challenged at the default level, and played the whole game again on the hardest level. The sniper rifle is cool, and I wish they included more ammo for it. As it is, you have to use it sparingly. Luckily, you carry your weapons from level to level. I found that once you start killing enemies on a level, see what weapons they are using. Use that weapon, so after every kill, you get more ammo.

Inside the buildings is a great place to use your pistols (and save the ammo of the other guns.) One game flaw - when you crouch and open a door and enter, sometimes the characters don't see you. It is a great time to get the pistol out and get a free headshot! Also, enemies cannot see you through a window! It's great to see what enemies are in the room before you open the door. In that way, you can choose the correct weapon for the job.

I thoroughly enjoyed the music for the most part. I wish it had a volume level instead of an on / off switch. I especially liked the Chinatown music (but I must admit, it was too loud.) On some levels I had to turn the music off, as I couldn't hear the footsteps of nearby bad guys.

I admit, this may not be a game for everybody, but I can't stop playing it. I long for a sequel, I want more! Any recommendations?
