This is the first edition of his book, which is now up to edition 3. Why would you even want to buy it then? Well, a big difference between this edition and the 2nd/3rd editions is that the CMIP material was completely removed in the later editions. If you are interested in CMIP, buy this edition. Otherwise buy the latest edition.

The CMIP material condenses the ITU standards down and attempts to explain them. His attempt is good, but is still difficult to follow. It's not really his fault, since the OSI layers are just not as simple as SNMP.

In addition to CMIP, this book covers SNMP v1 and v2. SNMPv3 is now available as a standard, but is not very widely used or deployed. Thus, this book is still relevant and useful even today for SNMP.

As with all of this books, Stallings does an excellent job of explaining the subject matter and taking the standard RFCs and providing useful, readable material.

I found this book to be very useful as a reference for many years (first for CMIP, later for SNMP). I recommend it - both as a reference and for learning the details of SNMP and CMIP.

For a reference on SNMP MIBs, a better book is Understanding SNMP MIBs by Perkins & McGinnis.
