5.0 out of 5 stars To the true fans, y'all gotta buy this album!, February 2, 2000
By
Jesse Raven (Toronto, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Snoop Dogg Presents Tha Eastsidaz (Clean) (Audio CD)
I'm deeply honoured to have the pleasure of writing the first or one of the first reviews for this album. I'll try my very best to give a fair and helpful review for prospective buyers.

Everybody has something to say about Snoop Dogg. He has had a reputation for going hot and cold, just like the weather up here in Toronto. I'll tell ya, it's cold up here right now, with snow, ice and sub-zero temperature, but I can't say the same for Snoop these days.... he's BLAZIN! We all know that Doggystyle was a tough act to follow, but maybe weren't prepared for The Doggfather to flop the way it did. When Snoop signed with No Limit, maybe it was a smart financial decision, but for his music, it seemed like bad news--which was clearly manifested in Da Game Is To Be Sold Not Told. D-O-double-G has clearly done his homework since then. Topp Dogg showed promises of return to his former style, but his appearances on Chronic 2001, his collaboration with the right crew--DPG, Dre, Xzibit, Warren G and now Tha Eastsidaz--has convincingly capitulated Snoop back among the top of the game, just as his talent rightfully demands. Moreover, it has brought him back to the roots.

Specifically, this album brings it all together. Its artists have strong chemistry together and its production is top notch. Tha Eastsidaz is a triumphant representation of smooth Hip Hop from the left coast. I've given the entire CD three spins now, and although the tracks continue to grow on me, I've got a good feel for my early favourites: Now We Lay 'Em Down (track 2) has a bumpin' reminiscent beat, just like the old days of the original Chronic album; Dogghouse (track 4) This track features Tha Locs and Rapp'n 4 Tay. Again, really strong beats and great chemistry. Tray Deee performs really well on this track; Got Beef (track 6) Easily one of my favourites, along with G'd Up. Production is tight, Snoop flows well with Jayo Felony and Sylk E. Fyne; G'd Up (track 10) I've had this song since its release as the album's first single and I am still lovin' it! Its production is solid, the chorus is catchy, and it's a great anthem for the West Coast, cuz it's all about chillin'; Big Bang Theory (track 14) Having Snoop Dogg, Xzibit and Kurupt together on the same track is enough reason for me to like it, but I haven't fully felt this one yet; Life Goes On (track 22) A nice ending to bring it all together, Snoop's flow is unique.

Overall, I really liked this album because its beats are catchy, the chemistry between Tha Eastsidaz is natural, and Snoop brings in a nice mixture of guest appearances with Xzibit, Butch Cassidy, Kurupt, Jayo Felony, Warren G and Rapp'n 4 Tay, among others. The highlight of the album is Tha Eastsidaz' collective performance as a group. Tray Deee makes a great case for himself, perhaps giving us a glimpse of future stardom and hopefully an upcoming solo album and Goldie Loc doesn't disappoint. In my opinion, this album is a significant step in the right direction for Snoop, showing his prowess and expertise in his debut release for Dogghouse Records.

Tha Eastsidaz continues to get heavy playtime in my CD player, perhaps not as good as Chronic 2001--it would have been great to hear one or two more songs with Snoop and Dre together, Hip Hop's ultimate tag-team--but significantly better than Topp Dogg. At the very least, if you're a big Snoop or West Coast fan, this album is a sure-fire hit! 4.6 stars, which I suppose rounds off to 5, right?
