This is a very high quality, well made dog backpack. I travel to Costa Rica 2-3 times a year with my companion dog Lucy (MinPin). We have had a number of other bags over the years; this is the best. This is a very high quality, well made dog backpack. I travel to Costa Rica 2-3 times a year with my companion dog Lucy (MinPin). We have had a number of other bags over the years; this is the best. I got the medium to assure plenty of room for 13 hours of confinement. The construction is sound--the framework of sturdy plastic-coated steel rods holds the bag open, and is doubly reinforced at the ends so that they don't poke through the fabric. The side storage bags are roomy. Screening all around assures good ventilation in hot environments. I don't usually carry her on my back, but I would slip a piece of padding through the lower back to pad the wheels against my back. It looks like a backpack--Lucy goes into restaurants un-noticed. As far as on the plane--it fits under the seat on most Delta flights, and where the space is a little too low, it is very easy to remove the bottom support panel, which allows the sides to cave in enough to fit under the seat. (A support bar across the middle front prevents collapse.) It is very cool!
I priced this bag on other sites at twice the price that I paid for it on Amazon--it goes by "roll away", "wheel away", and similar names, but all sites use the same photograph to advertise it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Someone got it right, July 17, 2009

I searched high and low for a backpack-style carrier I could use to take my dog to the vet weekly for her fluid therapy. She's 15, a schnauzer-dachshund mix (think long schnauzer or tall dachshund), 14 pounds and still pretty fidgety. She can't make the long walk anymore, and I don't have a car. The medium Wheel Away is the perfect size, even with her extra length. She can sit upright or lie down comfortably. Turning around inside is more challenging, but it can be done. I almost always carry her using the backpack straps, which are very comfortable and solid. My dog sometimes likes to sit and poke her head out of a small opening I make for her, but more often she simply lies down and goes for the ride, which tells me she's at ease with the carrier. The smartest feature is the mesh on three sides, giving her the ability to see what's going on around her and reducing panic. The side pockets are ample. I've rarely used the telescoping handle - she doesn't like the jerky nature of being pulled - but I'd probably use it in an airport where the floors are smooth. The carrier is sturdy and durable, easy to break down and collapse for storage . . . I really can't find anything to complain about. The designers simply got it right. I saw a pet owner with another brand of this type of carrier, and it looked poorly constructed by comparison; but this particular carrier apparently changed names, so there are two names it comes under. You can tell which to choose because it should be advertised as having won a design award in recent years. The only thing I'd change or recommend to the manufacturer is to loop the backpack straps at the ends to slip your hands in. I simply took the carrier to a shoe repair shop and had the loops stitched. Now all that's left is the final test - whether airlines accept the carrier for in-cabin travel and if it really does fit under the seat. The best purchase I've made in a long time. One warning: For whatever reason, and I'd read this before my purchase, you might get a different color carrier from what you ordered. I ordered black but got a red carrier instead. No big deal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy, August 2, 2009

This carrier is really handy, especially if you live in a city (I live in NY) and need to take your pet on public transportation. The only drawbacks are that the pet kind of half lies/sits on an angle when you wheel it--obviously the carrier has to be 45 degrees, and as a result, so is your pet. A regular, rectangular shaped carrier that has wheels allows your pet always to be in a comfortable lying position, but then doesn't have the backpack feature this does, which is quite convenient. Another drawback is the wheels kind of jut into your back when you carry it as a backpack. I think putting more padding on the back and perhaps adding a hip strap (to relieve shoulder strain) would be a great improvement to the product. It's also a little awkward for my dog to be in--she can only sit, and then when I lay it flat, she can't really stretch out too much and has to kind of curl up (she's a dachshund mix--maybe it's just her shape--longer than usual).

The reason I still give this carrier a good rating is because of its convenience. I'd say it's great for short trips and being able to carry it as a backpack is GREAT, but for longer trips (airplane travel), I'm thinking of getting a Sherpa-on-Wheels because it's more comfortable for my pet to sleep in for longer stretches of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Small Pets!, July 12, 2010

I have a 12 lb. Bichon. I've been using my first one for over 3 years in my car and traveling by plane; cross country at least 10 times. Recently got a second for my second car. It's been perfect. Fits under most seats on airplanes, can put on my back to walk through a crowd, or can pull through the airport. If I have one small critique, it's that the shoulder strap pulls are not as sturdy as they could be. Make sure to tuck them in to avoid the wheels damaging them when pulling.

Our 10 lb mini dachs - a rescue from a puppy mill through Dachshund Rescue of North America - flies with us to Canada and back every summer. Much more confident than when we first got her she still had not recovered from her fear of travelling until we found this rolling back pack. Carried on my back where she can see her surroundings she no longer shivers but sits up gazing out at the action. When the back-pack is lain down she settles on the sheepskin I provide and sleeps from take off to landing. We both appreciate the change in our lives on the move!!

This is a perfect solution for small dogs.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very handy 3-in-1 option for a small dog., March 23, 2010

This wheelie-pack is well made and solid. Pull the straps from the back pocket and it becomes a comfortable backpack, giving your pet a bird's-eye view of the world.

Extend the handle and wheel your pet down a sidewalk behind you (mine prefers to turn around and stand on her back legs (bracing her front paws on the back edge of the opening) so that she can face forward and see where she's going. It would be nice if the handle was hinged at the bottom so that the pet didn't have to ride at a 45-degree angle.

Lay the pack flat and it becomes a comfortable and secure little bed your dog can curl up in.

Only complaint was that the interior safety strap/clip pulled away from the seam and I had to sew it back into place. In spite of this, the construction of the pack was very good quality.

After much research on a huge variety of backpacks, I'm very pleased that I chose this one. My 9 pound Coton de Tulear loves it! I thought she'd fuss when I put her in it (like she does when I carry her on a walk), but she looks out through the screens (which I can unzip while leaving her safely clipped in) and doesn't make a sound. I like the fact that she has enough room to curl up in the bottom (and Cotons tend to be long dogs) and still see outside since the screen goes all the way to the bottom. This is perfect for those trails where dogs on leashes aren't allowed.
The pack is light weight, but even with a light weight dog, I found the straps got uncomfortable after a while if I wasn't wearing a coat to cushion them and the wheels banged into my lower back. I made a couple pads to go around the straps and one to cover the wheels and now it's perfectly comfortable, even on a long walk.
It's well constructed with a sturdy frame so the pack doesn't collapse around the pup when she's in it. And since she's a puppy, she loves to chew but she hasn't been able to make a mark on this thing! The wheels are solidly built, as is the handle, so wheeling her around is a breeze. The pockets on the sides are perfect for a few poop bags and some snacks, but I tend not to pack them with much so I can keep the weight down. I definitely recommend this to anyone with a small dog who wants to hit the "No pets on leashes allowed" trails!

I have emailed the vendor but have heard nothing back.

I am disappointed and don't think I will ever purchase from an outside vendor again. This is just a word of caution.
