My results were not so good
on October 10, 2013
I use an iPhone app to record snoring activity over night. It tells me start time, end time, duration, "snoring time," "relative snoring time" (as a %), average noise, threshold level, threshold crossings. It works quite well. The phone is on the nightstand next to me (it's on airplane mode, so no RF, no beeps or calls), same place each time. The app also produces a chart, the sort that might remind you of seismic waves (appropriately, I guess) for the night.
The app has been an eye-opener because I almost never hear myself, or wake myself up. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for loved ones. So...
I used this product for the first time last night and I was very eager too see how much improvement there was. I wore it correctly, per the picture and it was still on in the morning. By the way, wearing it was only mildly uncomfortable, which is about what I expected. There is also a chemical smell when it is removed from the bag, but I got used to it and it seems to be subsiding. Less relevant but the color is just awful. Looks fine on the guy wearing a black turtleneck (no accident) but without the color coordinated jammies, it looks like a bicycle tube around your head.
But how does it work? I expected I would not snore at all, maybe a bit, but with my mouth closed (jaw relaxed, lips together), problem solved, right? So I checked the app this morning to see if I'd snored at all last night..
It was worse. Not a little worse. It DOUBLED, or more, the total snoring time. Noise level was higher. Threshold (minimum sound level to be counted as snoring) was broken over twice as many times, compared to the typical bad night. According to the chart, there were very few times through the night that I did NOT snore. This is much different from the usual chart which might show periods of normal breathing interrupted by periods of snoring that might last 45 to 90 minutes.
I will try this product one more night to see if the results change, but if nothing changes, the results tell me this thing makes MY snoring worse, or causes it outright. Your results may vary, of course.
I do not suffer from apnea by the way. Sleep study verified that. It's just noise, for now. But this has been very disappointing. I really wanted it to work.
Follow up - tried it again for a 2nd night. I found it much more uncomfortable, though bearable, this time around. It seemed tighter somehow and a few hours after going to bed I pulled it off. When I checked the app chart the next morning, I actually IMPROVED considerably, though far from silent, after removing it.
This is not a terrible product, if it works for others. But it seems from other comments that it can treat a certain type of breathing issue - unfortunately not mine. I have returned it.
Amazon's return/refund was as effortless as it could be (I do have Prime, maybe that helps).
