Book Description

April 1, 1990
It's not easy being a kitten. Don't get me wrong. I love being scratched behind the ears, chasing Butch the dog, and eating Mother's stew.

My brother Toby and I learned about "people things" when we were adopted by Sarah and Ben. The only problem with kid-people is the games they like to play, like "Dress the Cat" -- and "Snot Stew".

It's not stew! But what is it? It's making a bully out of Toby and a wreck out of me!

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Two abandoned kittens encounter mishaps on all sides when they are adopted by a human family; PW praised the "appealing and humorous" story. Ages 9-12.

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-- Two kittens adopted by two children must learn the ways of humans. They hear the children arguing over possessions ("Is not!. . .Is too!) and think they are playing a game called "Snot Stew." When the kittens begin to play the game, however, they find that it can lead to hurt feelings, animosity, and danger. The story is narrated by the female kitten, and the descriptions of things from a cat's point of view are amusing at first and soon become simplistic and predictable. The story drags; its short, simple sentences create a feeling of stiffness. The most disturbing thing about the book is the contradictory nature of the kittens--they act very human on the one hand, but the plot is based on their misunderstandings of human nature. The story lacks believability. Those who have enjoyed such fine cat tales as Beverly Cleary's Socks (Morrow, 1973), Margaret Wise Brown's Sneakers (Addison-Wesley, 1979; o.p.), and Eleanor Clymer's Horatio (Macmillan, 1974) will not be satisfied with Snot Stew.

5.0 out of 5 stars NL-S Approved Book, March 5, 1999

Bill Wallace's book, Snot Stew, is a very funny, and energizing children's book. It's about two kittens named, Toby and Kikki, who are adopted by a boy and a girl. This book is the best childrens book I have ever read. It is easy to read and extremely funny. The book is written from the kittens' point of view which makes the book even more interesting. The adventures the two kittens go on will have you rolling on the floor. The part of the book I liked the best was when the boy and the girl were fighting over something, and they were yelling at each other "Is not!" "Is too!" "Isnot!" "Istoo!" "Snot!" "Stew!"

The major conflict was when the kittens got out of the fence, and the neighbor dog, Butch, a cat eating dog, almost ate them. Toby and Kikki were lucky enough to get away before the dog ate them.

I can't really relate to the kittens, but I can relate to the girl. I can understand how she gets into conflicts with her brother. I get into conflicts with my sisters all the time. I also have a dog that is very protective of his territory. If any other dog comes on my yard he barks and creates a ruckus. In that way I can relate to Butch, the dog in the book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recomend it to everyone

I bought this book for my 7 year old granddaughter. Both my sons, now grown men were delighted with the imaginative story telling that developed out of something very common. They read it many times and my granddaughter, having a very active imagination will enjoy it many times as well.
