Book Description

October 1998
It was 1929, on an ordinary winter’s eve, with no hint of miracles in the slate skies over the rural town of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. But misty rings circling the sun and a biting wind announced the coming of a big snow and promised the children a Christmas blanket of white. At six o’clock the snow began to fall. Large white flakes that obliterated distance and shut every home into its own isolated yard. December’s crystals hung from every eave, and it was very cold.

Mary Withers, a poor young widow with a sick child named Alexis, is in desperate need of asthma medication for her daughter. The paralyzing storm makes travel nearly impossible, and the doctor’s only hope is that Erick Mueller, son of the town’s coal vendor, can make it through the deep snow to Mary’s house with the coal truck.

It was Erick’s unusual kindness that had given Mary the extra coal to heat her house in the storm. Will the young college professor also find a way to help save Alexis’s life?

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In 1929, King of Prussia, PA, is hit by a devastating snowstorm. Erick Mueller, a college professor visiting home for the holidays, takes over when his father, the coal man, can't deliver the town's fuel. In the process, he meets Mary Withers, a widow with a young asthmatic daughter, Alexis, and as the weeks pass, they grow closer. Miller (Disarming the Darkness, Zondervan, 1998) balances their romance with the family drama of the Muellers' other son, Otto, who had been disowned for fighting in the Great War against his father's wishes. By Christmas, several crises arise: Mary is unwilling to move on from her first marriage, medication for Alexis's severe asthma attack seems undeliverable owing to the snow, and the Mueller family receives letters that lead them to believe that Otto is back in town. Miller touchingly wraps everything up on Christmas Eve. Anyone who hates old-fashioned sentiment should find a lot to dislike here, but most readers will love this family drama with spiritual overtones. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Winner., February 20, 1999
This review is from: Snow (Snow Series #1) (Hardcover)
How Calvin Miller develops such character depth so quickly is remarkable. Even though the book is short you will feel you know the characters like old friends, even the busy bodies on the phone. Miller again touches me with his writing. A real feel good book. If you try this one and love it which you will, Please try the Singer trillogy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Snow - Short 1929 Love Story, January 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Snow (Snow Series #1) (Hardcover)
I became interested in this book reading the jacket cover that explained that this was a story about a widow, her sick child, and the son of the town's coal vendor. The story take place in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, and since by Father lives there I decided to give it a try.

It is a very short book, a real fast read, with a fairly simple plot, but I enjoyed the story and the characters in the book.

I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys an uncomplicated story that has a happy, feel good ending.

3.0 out of 5 stars Warmth Despite the Cold, October 21, 2005
This review is from: Snow (Snow Series #1) (Hardcover)
I must admit I purchased this book because it was a dollar; it was worth that, but possibly not much more. "Snow" is a short novel, that moves quickly through a predictable plot with cardboard cutout characters. Yet as simplistic as the story is, Miller manages to infuse some warmth into his writing, keeping the reader's attention even though they know what is going to happen.

"Snow" is the story of a bitter cold winter in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. The weather brings together the unlikeliest of characters; Mary, a poor widow with an asthmatic child and the Mueller family - rich through the delivery of coal, stingy and lacking the true spirit of Christmas. Their son Erick takes over deliveries for his father due to an injury, and with one visit to Mary's humble home, falls in love despite his father's warnings. Mary, a widow for three years, has devoted her life and happiness to ensuring that her daughter survives and is at first unwilling and uncertain of her feelings for Erick.

The novel runs predictably through a cast of characters that lack depth. Miller focuses too much time on telling rather than showing through his writing; and his insistence on depicting Hans Mueller's germanic accent soon grows old. The reader knows that everything is going to turn out okay in the end. Yet despite that fact, Miller makes some observations about the meaning of Christmas, that while not necessarily new ground, are observations that many have forgotten. "Snow" is a good reminder of how the spirit of Christmas infuses us all.
