In the fall of 1971, I started a new job as principal of the local high school in Glide, Oregon. Soon after moving to the community, my wife, Dana and I were introduced to a young, semi-famous singer/songwriter named Hoyt Axton. He was a bear of a man, with a twinkle in his eye and we both felt he was an individual we wanted to know better. Hoyt lived on top of a mountain in a huge log "mansion" with wife Katheryn, two boys, a girl, several dogs and several vehicles. We became socially active, spending many weekend evenings, talking, listening to him play and meeting some of his friends, Bob Denver, Arlo Guthrie and the Three Dog Night's Cory Wells. It was a blast to say the least!! Hoyt had a few albums out at the time, but his favorite at the time was "Griffin". He had a few artist's free-bees and he gave them to the local citizens who appreciated his music. My wife and I played the album (33 1/3, vinyl) until we wore it out. What a classic! Snow Blind Friend and Never Been to Spain were our favorite cuts. Thank God, someone had the good sense to provide the world with a CD of "My Griffin is Gone" Thank you Amazon.

This album is worth purchasing just for Snowblind Friend, Pancho and Lefty, and Seven Come - great songs!

In my estimation, this album is the best display of classic Hoyt Axton that one can get. The title song speaks of the depth ones soul can go. There is no better.
