Story of Survival,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Snow Bound (Paperback)
Snowbound centers around the story of two isolated teens, Cindy Reichert and Tony Laporte, who happen to find each other and become stuck in the snow after a storm hits. Tony is a spoiled kid who is a little conceited and feels as though he should have things his way. Cindy is a little self-concious about her self worth, and does not seem to understand the right way to feel better about who she is. When Tony gets upset with his parents for not letting him keep a dog that he found, he decides to skip school and "steal" the family car to look for the dog. Along the way, he picks up Cindy, who is hitchhiking because her bus is late. From there the clashing of their personalities becomes apparent, and eventually, after they get stuck, they have to learn how to get along to survive in the snow.
Although a bit simplistic, the major essense of Mazer's work is to show how important cooperation is to the element of survival. Will Tony and Cindy use each other's skills to get out of their delimma? Or will they just fight? Another significant asepct of the book is the issue of self identity and change. Cindy and Tony must figure out their own strengths and personal weaknesses and come to another realization about themselves.

Snow Bound - Harry Mazer,
By Kurt (Pepin, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Snow Bound (Paperback)
This book is about a spoiled boy, Tony, and how hw gets himself and a hitchiker, Cindy , into trouble. The story starts with Tony wanting a dog but his parents won't let him because of the responsibilities. He brings home a stray but soon it is kicked out and that makes Tony upset. He decides to go after his dog instead of going to school. He is so upset he decides to get even and takes his mothers car. Meanwhile Cindy is at a bus station and decides she could get where she wants by hitchhiking. She gets picked up by a guy and she is unsure of him so she gets out on the highway. Tony is heading down the highway and sees her. He picks her up and go. They are heading to Tony's uncle. The snow is getting worse and soon they are driving lost. They panic and end up in field unable to drive out. They rely on each other to survive for a few days and then Tony leaves to find help. Instead he finds a cabin and there is food there. He returns to Cindy at the car. They decide to move from the car to the cabin. Cindy has frostbite and they have to move slowly. They take the hood of the car and use it for a sled. They get moving too fast and Tony breaks his leg. They hobble along and they have to ward off wild dogs. They come across a park. They follow the road and a lady, Mrs. Littlejohn, sees them. The story ends with Tony at the hospital and Cindy back at home.

A remarkable tale of survival and maturity,
By A Customer
This review is from: Snow Bound (Paperback)
This is the first HM book I've ever read, and so far I like what I see. He's just as good as his wife. I couldn't put this one down, especially when Tony and Cindy were lost in the woods. I'm a lot like the latter. I understand how she could get irritated with Tony. But I liked their ingenuity. Not many people could endure being stranded in the forest for so long. Even they needed some time to learn that being dependent on someone else(although you may not like that person)can be just as important to survival as being independent. To quote a famous playwright, you must go into the woods to grow, and grow they did. I reccomend this book to anyone!

snow bound,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Snow Bound (Paperback)
Snow bound. I like the book because it made me want to read on and on. The reason why I picked this book was because the cover interested me. The first couple of chapters were boring, but then became exciting. The theme was not to run away and bad things can happen. Be careful of what you wish for. A boy Tony finds a dog and want to keep it, but his parents don't want it, and kick it out of the house. Tony runs away because he's angry at his parents. He meets another run-away named Cindy. They get lost in the middle of nowhere after a fight. This story is believable because people can get into fights and get lost. The characters are believable because they behave like normal teenagers. I would recommend this book to people because it's an interesting story that makes you want to read and read to find out what is going to happen.

SNOW,
This review is from: Snow Bound (Paperback)
Tony Laporte finds himslelf in a very tricky situation after he crashes his car in a big snow storm with a person that he can no get along with named Cindy. This is book is very good. At the start it seems like it takes off and get you started with the whole book. Once you pick it up it is hard to put it back down. I gave it a five star rating because I thought that it was a great book. The way that the author explained things just helped me make more sense of the book. If you are a person that likes some action in a book this book is probably for you.

Very Exciting,

I had to read this book for school, and I really liked it. It told a lot of the hardships that Tony and Cindy went through when they were lost. It also gave me some idea's about what to do if I am ever in that situation. It had some twists like when the snowmobilers came and past, not even seeing them. If I had been in that situation I would have been bored out of my mind, and scared out of my wits. I recommend this to anyone who likes stories about survival.

Good Book for a book report.,

My son, who is 17, had to do a book report. Being one that does not like to read, he wanted something interesting, but not to long. He said this was a book that kept his attention, but wasn't to long. He would definitely recommend it to any other student that doesn't like reading but has an upcoming book report due.

Great Wilderness Escape Books,
By C. Mathieu "waldenpond88" (Worcester, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Snow Bound (Hardcover)
I read "Cold River" after the German translation came out and after the TV movie had been shown. Once I had watched it, I had to read the book.
I even went to Cold River in the Adirondacks in 1994, but in order to get to the spot where the book takes place, one needs to ride on horseback (ask at Cold River Ranch, they offer horses). That did lead me to read Harry Mazer's "The Island Keeper" (an even better wilderness book about a girl surviving all by herself on an island in a huge lake...Mazer wrote the book in 1981) which unfortunately never became a movie although one reader mentioned a movie, but when I checked us.imdb.com, Harry Mazer is not in their database. "Snowbound" is another Harry Mazer book I can recommend to everybody who enjoyed "Cold River" and "The Island Keeper". If you are interested in some other great wilderness book escapes, read Anne LaBastille's autobiographies "Woodswoman" and "Beyond Black Bear Lake". The Canadian author Kathrene Pinkerton wrote some great wilderness books for kids and 3 autobiographies which I absolutely love and keep rereading! I forgot the name of the author who wrote "My Side of the Mountain" (there are two sequels) which became an even better movie film. And last, but not least there is Gary Paulsen who wrote two great books about Brian who survived an airplane crash and ended up being lost in the wilderness in winter (good books, good movie). |
