Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

reS-Gr 2-A first winter snowfall, as experienced by a small boy and his older brother on their farm long ago, is recalled in this thoughtful mood piece. As the two boys make their way to the owl woods to await the start of the storm, they observe the changes in nature with the approaching weather. The sky grows darker, the pines give off a pungent smell, and the loud cawing of crows has hushed as the first flakes begin to fall. A sense of peace envelops the woods, despite the growing intensity of the snow. Finally, as evening draws near, the warmth of home offers welcome relief as the children relate the day's experiences over hot cocoa. Evocative oil paintings complement the lyrical text and reemphasize the silent beauty of winter.

From Booklist

Ages 4-8. A boy remembers a snowstorm on the family farm in evocative and rich language. He describes the family farmhouse in a valley and explains how all the animals seem to know the snow is coming. His older brother takes him to the pinewoods, and they build a small fire and hope for a glimpse of an owl. The snow starts--small at first--but then "one by one, the flakes fill the cups of fallen leaves." The owl appears, silent as the smoke from their fire, and they trudge home, guided by the warm light from the kitchen. The text floats over full-page oils, sturdy and nostalgic images, their careful geometry keeping them from fluffiness or sentimentality. GraceAnne DeCandido

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the favorites of myself and my 3 year old, April 30, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Snow Comes to the Farm (Hardcover)
Some kids books you just love to read over and over, relishing every word and image. More often than not, your child loves these same ones. For us, this is one of those books. Kiesler perfectly captures the wintery scenes and the text is just right - straightforwardly describing the wonders of the first big snow of the winter on a small boy without any selfconsciousness. Captures the imagination. Love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars a favorite, November 14, 2010
This review is from: Snow Comes to the Farm (Paperback)
This is a fantastic book, our four year old is crazy about it and has half the book memorized and will read it to us on snowy days. It even gave us the idea to take him out and watch incoming snowstorms when he is a little older. I see this book is out of print, that is really too bad, I am sure many more children would love to read it.

This is one of the best children's books ever and now I have lost it somewhere. Signed on to buy another one and the least expensive is over $73?! I really hope they publish this again as it is such a wonderful, heart warming book. A literary treasure!
