Rylant's best book yet!,

This review is from: Snow (Hardcover)
My children (ages 5 & 7) love this book. I've also read it to two groups of third graders and my 6th grade advanced English class. This book is incredibly well written! The words feel like falling snow! It's a warm, heartfelt sentiment about snow of which children in Ohio can certainly relate. For grade 6, I used it as a jumping off point for a writing in class and served cocoa while we read it. A must have for children's book collectors.

This is a great book for all the little snow bunnies out there!,
This review is from: Snow (Hardcover)
There are all kinds of snow. There is the kind snow that "comes softly in the night." swirling outside in the night until the little children wake up to visit with it. There is the kind that "begins to fall in fat, cheerful flakes" whenever you'd rather be out in it instead of where you are. Snow is beautiful and it swirls in all different kinds of ways and times for every child to enjoy. Some snows are heavy, while others just flutter to the ground."Children love snow better than anyone does, and they never complain as they pull on their red boots and mittens and make plans to catch wet flakes on their tongues." The collaboration between the author and the illustrator in Snow is perfect. The words and illustrations mesh exceedingly well and the joy of falling snow is almost palpable. The art work is beautiful and busy and even the very young child will enjoy this book without knowing how to read. This is a great book for all the little snow bunnies out there!

As a big fan of Cynthia Rylant, I purchased this for my two young girls this Christmas, thinking especially of my snow-loving four-year-old. When I read this beautiful book to my daughter, I assumed the she would simply think the book was about children loving snow and the things children do in the snow. Days later she was talking about snow (we had several feet) and made a very profound statement about snow - I knew then she got so much more out of the story than I ever thought she could. When I read the story; it brought tears to my eyes. The story is about much more than snow.... but I won't tell you my interpretation as yours may be different.I'll be giving this as a gift to friends and family for years to come. The illustrations are works of art. Don't hesitate to order this one!

This is a great children's book - the illustrations are just beautiful. They captured snow so wonderfully. A 3 year old neighbor had a sneak preview of the book before it was sent off to a relative. He really enjoyed it. I will order this book again

ON THE BUILDING OF MEMORIES...Don't let your child miss this one folks.,
This review is from: Snow (Hardcover)
So very many emotions make their little appearances when reading this work to or with a child; joy, blissfulness, a warm fuzzy feeling which will drift the adult reader back to simpler times, and of course the delight of discover of a child and the memories you know that they, the child, will too be storing away for long wintery nights far into their future.Cynthia Rylant is one of my favorite authors of children's books. She simply has a way about her that naturally attracts the young and delights the child in all of us. She has teamed up with Lauren Stringer on this one and I must say that this is truly a winning team...they are quite in tune. This is the story of snow; all kinds of snow: "Some snows fall only lightly, just enough to make you notice the delicate limbs of trees, the light falling from the lamppost, a sparrow's small feet." You can close your eyes and just see and feel this delightful kind of snow, especially if you make just a wee effort and view it through the child part of your mind. "The best snow is the snow that comes softly in the night, like a shy friend afraid to knock, so she thinks she'll just wait in the yard until you see her. This is the snow that brings you peace." This work not only incorporates the very young, but the reader is given a steady flow of beloved parts of their lives; their animals, grandparents...family. Both the writer and the artist have conveyed much love and much sweet caring throughout the work. This is an ideal work to read to the little ones before bed time on a cold winter's evening. The writing is peaceful; the art work soothing. "And the snow, while it is here, reminds us of this: that nothing last forever except memories." I have never read a book by this author that I did not like but I have to tell you that she sort of out did herself with this one...it is an absolute gem. Don Blankenship The Ozarks

A treasure for all ages,

When I babysit my 4 yr old grandson and granddaughter(twins), we always read a few books before naptime. Discovering "Snow" in the stack of library books they had just brought home was like finding a special gem. We read it several times while on loan which happened to be during snowy weather. It was like sharing my own childhood memories of wintertime and certainly set the mood for a winter's nap--a "warm fuzzy" indeed! I love this storybook for the lovely poem that it is, and continue to marvel at Cynthia Rylant's talent for expressing so beautifully what I would deem indescribable. And Lauren Stringer's illustrations are so right for this story, too. Of course I had to have this book, not only for my grandkids and myself, but for my best friend and her grandkids, as well.

Snow is a fabulous picture book for snowy winter days. Cynthia Rylant's prose is warm and quiet and cozy, perfect for a book about snow! The illustrations are beautiful. Even as an adult, this is a book I do not mind spending hours re-reading with grand-kids.
