Book Description

July 24, 2000
Set in the underground dance culture of modern Los Angeles, Snow is a dark, brooding fairytale of a techno-drenched, da-glo world gone wrong for its hero and heroine - the shellshocked, opium-addicted private eye and the pale, strangely familiar dark-haired girl he follows through a world of clubs, coffeehouses, strip bars and raves. Something in her is linked to a past he feels but cannot remember. Slowly he begins to uncover the mystery... But sometimes old stories are better left unknown. Part Snow White, part hardboiled detective novel, all trance-inducing hyperliterature, Snow is a densely atmospheric novel of hypnotic rhythms, ultravivid images and droning ambient moods.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"One of the strangest and most hauntingly beautiful books I've read." -- Organism

From the Author

Snow evolved as a product of my intensive involvement with dance culture and mind-altering electronic music. The book is in one aspect a fictional evocation of my experience of rave and my experiences - both positive and negative - of trance and other rhythm-induced altered states of consciousness. In another aspect, the book is "literary trance": writing which induces a dreamlike state in the reader through the use of rhythm, vivid imagery and other elements. In its most salient aspect, Snow is a work of Hyperliterature: a literary form derived by mixing together existing themes, genres and styles - hardboiled detective fiction, French literature, Snow White, modern Japanese writing - to create a literary mosaic, similar in approach to sample-based electronic music produced by mixing musical sources.

5.0 out of 5 stars Snow Review, November 6, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Snow (Paperback)
This book is trance inducing in a totally different way than any book I've ever read. It isn't just a story about rave culture, it actually IS trance. It's hard to explain - reading it is sort of like having a dream, or experiencing an altered state without drugs. It's incredibly cool, and kind of bizarre.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW, March 18, 2001

Hey, this is a pretty insane book. The images are so intense they left me literally in a daze. Absolutely the best choice for anyone interested in rave culture ART, rather than the usual pop fiction or "drugumentary" fare.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't want it to end, August 31, 2005

I'm reading this one slowly, more slowly as I near the end--chanced upon this book, bought it in spite of "Rave culture" dance pop stuff which was pretty silly for cover remarks or reviews. This is poetry. What writing. Almost pointless story, if it can be called a story, but this book exists on a level that is haunting and compelling just for its beautiful descriptions and analogies. I looked it up because I wanted more by this guy--don't see any other books at this point by him, but will be on the lookout. Pure magic.
