4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting frontier tale featuring a fearless husky, January 22, 2005
This review is from: Snow Dog (Bantam Skylark Book) (Paperback)
This adventure story, like many of Kjelgaard's, centers around a noble canine that lives by the rough and tumble code of the frontier. Chiri is a half wild husky dog, and Link is the lonely trapper who befriends him. We follow the husky as he grows from a young pup, orphaned after a vicious attack by a black wolf.

The descriptions of the landscape and wildlife betray an intimate knowledge of the northern woods, and the life of the trapper Link bears the same whiff of authenticity. The natural settings help a young person to develop an appreciation for nature, and for where humans belong in the scheme of things. There are also lessons about trust and honor, and other values that are desirable.

The action scenes are plentiful and exciting, and the heroes of all species use their strength and cunning to overcome all obstacles.

The book is in the tradition of White Fang, but is written in a more straightforward manner that should be pleasing to younger readers as well as adults who appreciate the crisp style of a Louis Lamour tale.

If you're already a fan of Kjelgaard's writing, you should consider this to be one of his best works.

4.0 out of 5 stars Revisiting my youth, December 29, 2006

Read a Lot (West Virginia USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Snow Dog (Bantam Skylark Book) (Paperback)
I am a 50ish woman and Jim Kjelgaard was my favorite writer when I was a young reader. I found I could get his books and ordered Snow Dog and Wild Trek. As an adult I still find the writing to be better than average compared to many current best selling authors. I enjoyed reading Snow Dog and am looking forward to reading Wild Trek (which was my favorite book).

Reading Kjelgaards books, and other books about the outdoors and wilderness adventures, probably contributed to my life long love of the outdoors and my interest in the environment and conservation.

I am glad to see young readers are still enjoying his books

By A Customer
This review is from: Snow Dog (Bantam Skylark Book) (Paperback)
Snow Dog was a wonderful story of a dog's loyalty and courage in his final battle with his long-time arch enemy, the Black Wolf. Kjelgaard was at his peak when he wrote of the inspiring life and love of Link Stevens and Chiri.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review on Snow Dog, October 24, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Snow Dog (Bantam Skylark Book) (Paperback)
The book Snow Dog by Jim Kjelaard is a wild adventure/survival tale. It's a thrilling adventure saga of a husky pup alone against the northern wilderness in the early 1900's.

The steel-gray husky, Chiri, was just a pup when the he witnessed black wolf killed his mother and brother. Alone in the great northern wilderness, he learned to survive by instinct and native intelligence, hunting small game for himself and keeping warm in the den his mother built for him. He lived life seeking revenge, knowing he would one day cross paths again with his vicious enemy and only one would survive. Trapper, Link Stevens, is the only human Chiri will learn to trust. The plot takes the reader from the time Chiri is left orphaned in the great wilderness, to when he unites with Link Stevens and saves his life.

In my opinion, this adventure saga was a great book. The details the author uses to describe what is happening is amazing. The description of the bitterness and the harshness of the great northern wilderness made you feel like you were there. The tone of this book is very straight forward. It is told in third person. I would recommend this book to anyone.

After being so certain I had lost this book forever, I was so pleased to find Snow Dog still in print and available on Amazon! I read this book as a child and recalled its profound effect on me as one of the cherished books that instilled a love of reading that followed me into adulthood. Highly recommended reading for kids, I can't wait until my nephews are old enough to enjoy this classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dog Story, February 10, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Snow Dog (Bantam Skylark Book) (Paperback)
This a story about a man called Link Stevens, who went out dog sledding.
He had 5 dgs named Queen, Tibby, Yuke, Lud and Kena. One of the 5 dogs named Queen was pregnant. After a while she ran away and made her windfall.
She got three puppies which were incredibly adorable,
who were very active and very smart.
After a while the most active puppy had to fear watching his mother and two die from a black wolf's atack...
I liked this book because I like stories that grab your attention. If you like books full of adventure then this is the book for you!

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Snow Dog (Bantam Skylark Book) (Paperback)
Thrilling, discriptive, and captivating. This is Snow Dog! This book is my second favorite Kjelgaard (next to Wild Trek of course). This is truley on of his greatest. It brings you into the wilderness along with Link Stevens, Queen;Links other dogs Yuke, Kena, Lud, and Tibby;and the famous son of Queen,Chiri. In this stirring tale you will find murderous wolves, bull moose, and a huge grizzly bear. When Queen runs from Link to have her puppies in piece she finds it very hard to raise puppies in the wilderness. Her masked faced puppy, later to become the powerfull snow dog Chiri,is the only one to survive the black wolf's attack. The puppy learns the wilderness and grows to be a huge wild dog. But one day that all changed. Read this thrilling story to find out the history behind the dog of Wild Trek, and one dog's grudge on a certain black wolf who killed his mother and brothers.
