Book Description

4 and upP and up
Snow ghosts live in the far, far north, a wintry, cold place where it is always snowing. A place where snow ghosts do exercises, catch snowflakes on their tongues, slide on their bellies, and sometimes even turn colors! It is a magical place and on full-moon nights those with enough imagination can see snow ghosts dancing around the big, white moon.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 3-In "the far, far north, where snow is always falling," lives a playful and companionable group of snow ghosts. Their pastimes include snowman contests, ice-floe races, and moonlit dances. Sometimes, with much effort, a ghost manages to turn from white to another color. Landry's minimalist watercolor-and-pencil illustrations meld marvelously with the text. Whether speeding down icy hills on their bellies or wearing dark glasses to protect their eyes on sunny days, the ghosts have endearing charm. The book's small format and low-key tone are reminiscent of M. B. Goffstein's work. This title will work best one-on-one or with a couple of children, and will stretch the imaginations of those who take the time to relish its quiet humor.

Review

"The text is soft-spoken and specific with a touch of poetry underneath...the experience is comfy and inviting." The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

"This title... will stretch the imaginations of those who take the time to relish in its quiet humor." School Library Journal

"Looking like marshmallow gum-drops, roughly the size of a thumbprint, the snow ghosts possess a fanciful charm... [and] conjure the magic and whimsy of a fresh snow fall." Publishers Weekly

5.0 out of 5 stars Snow Magic, January 23, 2004
This review is from: The Snow Ghosts (Hardcover)
Snow is magic. Any kid who stands inside and sees it falling knows the magic. Any kid who stands outside in white universe knows it even more. Leo Landry has introduced us to a new way to appreciate snow -- in the company of snow ghosts. Living in the far north, snow ghosts have their own way of life. "In the afternoons, the snow ghosts have fun sliding down long icy hills of snow on their smooth ghost bellies." Landry's simple line drawings with watercolor accents create a new world full of delightful characters delighting in the magic of snow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny & sweet--a favorite, July 17, 2009
This review is from: The Snow Ghosts (Hardcover)
My 2-year old son LOVES this book and we read it almost every night. The drawings make us both giggle and the text has a lovely cadence and just the right balance between simple phrasing and more complex words. Highly recommended!
