Book Description

November 27, 2006
Snow Hill, on the banks of the Pocomoke River, has been home to farmers, bankers, merchants, artisans, sea captains, and politicians for more than 300 years. Founded by English settlers from a part of London named Snow Hill," the town became a trading post on the Pocomoke and was designated a royal port by William and Mary of England. Trade was the engine that drove commerce in the town, and the Pocomoke River was the highway. Imported goods were brought into Snow Hill to be taxed, and lumber, tobacco, and crafts by local artisans were exported across the Atlantic. Snow Hill's economic success spread rapidly in the 19th century as steamboats carried passengers to Norfolk and Baltimore and the railroad brought opportunities to expand local markets. Hotels, shops, boarding houses, and stately homes sprang up as the economy expanded. Today Snow Hill boasts one of the largest concentrations of historic homes, churches, and commercial buildings still intact in the state of Maryland. Residents are committed to preserving the town's heritage so it will remain "the Treasure of the Eastern Shore."

More About the Author

I am a writer and a traveler, with a ton of energy and wonderful travel partner (Dan Burgoyne). Together we roll along American roads with r-pod in tow, scouting out the best fishing spots, flatwater kayaking trails, historic towns, haunted houses, and the friendly people along the way.

My full time job is with the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, where I get to help businesses and local governments in Maryland's rural Eastern region. That job first exposed me to the treasures Maryland has in her small rural towns. My familiarity with both Easton and Snow Hill and the subsequent books I wrote on these towns, began with helping small towns all over the Eastern Shore through my job as an economic development field rep.

I have developed a keen interest in mystical places, or "thin places" where the veil between this world and the eternal world is thin. My book Haunted Eastern Shore; Ghostly Tales from East of the Chesapeake grew from this interest as did my writing on mystical sites in Ireland and the UK.

In my spare time, I write, I blog, ( www.travelhag.com ) and I talk incessantly about the places I visit. Travel is such an enriching experience. The only thing better than travel is enjoying our family and friends. We have six grown children and eight grandchildren, three large dogs and lots of chickens.

4.0 out of 5 stars Snow Hill, Maryland Images of America, December 19, 2006

Not being a native of Worcester County and having worked in Snow Hill for the past 12 years, I found this book fascinating. I have admired the architecture of the churches and older homes I have seen here and this book gave me an insight of the history behind the town and the culture. This pictorial history of this small town makes it an interesting and easy to read book. If you have never been to Snow Hill the book is enticing enough to make you want to visit. I found it interesting that Snow Hill boasts one of the largest concentrations of historical church and commercial buildings still intact in the state of Maryland.

5.0 out of 5 stars Snow Hill, December 9, 2006

If ever a book describes a small, historic town settled during the dawn of the American colonial period (1684), it is, "Snow Hill." I've been to Snow Hill and through the book, I revisited the town streets lined with their stately homes and found the revisit just as colorful and accurate as I recall them in my mind's eye. Happily, it is a photographically intensive book which makes for easy reading. I believe that "Snow Hill" will fit quite comfortably and quite authoritatively in the Arcadia Publishing's series, "Images of America." If you are interested in an excellent documentation of a small, colonial town that grows up, down and up again into the 21st Century, read "Snow Hill." It's a must for any library on Americana.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Done!, December 6, 2006

I live near Snow Hill, Maryland, and this pictoral history gives a real insight to the early days of this charming town. It's worth the price for anyone who has visited or plans to visit the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland.
