Cut the cord. Ideal for clearing snow from sidewalks, driveways and decks, the Snow Joe iON is the newest addition to the Snow Joe lineup and the first single stage snow blower to provide easy and convenient cord-free operation. Powered by EcoSharp technology, Snow Joe’s patent-pending rechargeable 40-volt lithium-ion battery system, the iON delivers up to 50 minutes of whisper-quiet run time with zero carbon emissions for cleaner air. No pull-cords, gas, oil, tune-ups or tangled extension cords to cause unnecessary frustration!
The iON starts instantly with a simple push of a button and its adjustable handle maximizes user comfort during use. Equipped with a heavy-duty, steel auger with 2 rubber blades, the iON moves up to 500 pounds of snow per minute, clearing a path 18-inches wide by 8-inches deep with each pass. Plus, the rubber scraper bar at the base of the unit lets you clear right to the ground without damaging your deck or pavement. Featuring a 180° auto-rotate chute that rotates instantly with the push of a switch, the iON lets you throw snow up to 20 feet in the direction you want it to go. Compared to heavier gas and electric-powered units, the iON weighs only 32 lbs so you can easily carry it onto your snow-filled deck to clear out fast. For nighttime snow removal, the iON has an integrated LED headlight that quickly switches on to increase visibility. I have an electric, extension corded model, which seems slightly more powerful than the gas model, but the safety interlock switch mechanism has been touch and occasionally it won't start at all. When it does work it's awesome, sans moving the cord, which though not too bad isn't really a hassle. The problem is I'm on a corner lot, and the extension cords just don't go that far.
Thus, when I learned about the Snow Joe ION, I was excited, and since it's snowing a lot this year I ordered one.
So far, I've used it twice on 1 and then 2 inches of light fluffy snow, however I have also used it to clear plowed, somewhat icy snow at the street corner and the driveway, though not extensively. I was pleased that it handles it - you have to rock in and out, it'll slow and stop if you push in to hard, but it was making progress roughly equivalent to maybe 80% of the gas engine on the big plow leavings.
The fluffy snow was being thrown farther than the gas engine throw it, but not as far as the corded electric. It is quieter than both the other throwers.
I really like the flashlight.
It has a powered chute aiming control.Read more ›
Here is a big winter storm update from 1/5/14 - we got a 6-8 total snowfall from last night and the Snow Joe was able to handle it but definitely slower especially as the snow had drifted. This total does seem to be about its limit. I also ran out of battery after about 50 minutes and could not finish the whole driveway and sidewalks. I will have to go out and finish after a couple of hours or however long it takes battery to recharge. A lot of heavy snow definitely runs down the battery a little quicker. Still believe it's a very good investment as these heavy snows are not common here in Chicago.
The iON18SB uses a high voltage LIon rechargeable battery which on a full charge will give you about 45 mins run time in average snow conditions. The deeper and heavier the snow is, the less run time you will get. The torque from the electric motor is every bit as strong as the Toro electric and slightly weaker than an equivalent gasoline engine.
I can easily clear my driveway, front entrance walk and part of the sidewalk on my corner lot on one battery if the snow is average weight and about 2"-4" deep. Recent heavy snows of about 6-8" burn up one battery just for the driveway. In my area, a second battery is a must. I'm sure eventually someone will make a non OEM replacement, but right now the battery is expensive and hard to find outside of SnowJoe itself.
I was really impressed with the ability of the motor to clear deep, heavy snow. Using the two pass technique, I've cleared 12-16" depths on my driveway and icy mounds at the end of the driveway thrown up by the snow plows. The lightweight of the mostly plastic body makes it easy to manipulate and shave off the tops of deep drifts. As such, it is definitely a machine designed for subdivision homes, not prolonged heavy duty rural use.
Before purchasing, consider the total cost of the blower and a spare battery. You don't really need a second charger. Also consider the savings on fuel, oil and tune ups that you'd incur with a gasoline model. Best of all, I can clear at all times of the day or night because it is very quiet, about the same as an electric broom.
