They love the book. My son wants to involve his entire town to organize a town wide contest for next year. He wants to see lit snow sculptures in everyone's front yards. They are currently working on a lochness snow monster sculpture, an igloo, and lighted glowing snow formations. Next will be the giant snowman that will be taller than their house when they get done. Of course it will be lit up this year after reading this book. I hope that they make it onto the local news-- they are having lots of fun. This book is going to help insure lots of family fun memories.
The projects are so awesome and every project, lists the: time frame to complete; level of difficulty, the type of snow project, the number of people needed, and tools needed.
There are (25) projects and games, such as: a snow cave, ice slide, snow castle, crystal bar, ice charms to hang from the trees, nature projects in ice, a snow frosted cake, glowing eye sculpture, mutated snowmen, pixel man, frozen critters, or an upside down man (my favorite). Each project gives detailed instructions, and wonderful color photos of what the finished project should look like. These projects are not something that a small child could complete without adult assistance. Snow safety is also discussed, as some of these projects like a snow cave could be dangerous and should not be attempted alone.
In addition to the snow projects, the book includes several pages listing all Snow Festival locations, locales featuring snow and igloo hotels, both here in the US and abroad. Whatever you choose, you will likely find something perfect in this book that will entertain and please everyone. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
The photos in the book are clear and helpful, although they are often in large scenic places rather than showing how something might look in the common yard, which I might have preferred. I don't know about an age range on the book, but time frames are given for each project as are difficulty ratings. We tried a couple of the projects so far and they work, although we couldn't achieve the perfection shown in the photos. No matter, we had the most fun in making our own imperfect interpretations of the projects in the book. Rather than this being an absolute how-to guide, the real value lies in stimulating the imagination enough to make snow play in the middle of winter fun again.
My nephews have loved this book so much that this is the second copy I have purchased now for more of my family members. My nephews have used some of the ideas for their boy scout gatherings.
