Book Description

May 2005
Seventeen collaborations in snow and ice between international architects and artists, The Snow Show took place in early 2004 in a remote area of Finnish Lapland. A short introduction by curator Lance Fung explains the history and ideas behind this exceptional event and the individual artworks. This is followed by a lavish 144-page full-colour portfolio of the finished projects, ranging from room-sized cylindrical ice-block lanterns to an 81-metre-square mosaic of frozen designer waters and an amphitheatre made from snow. The artworks are ordered by construction technique: compacted snow, cast ice, harvested ice and experimental processes. Printing on a different stock in two icy colours, the remaining 64 pages explain the techniques used to make each structure, with project descriptions written by the artists and architects themselves. With exquisite photography, detailed plans and sketches, the book is a celebration of overcoming natures harshest conditions with ingenuity, elegance and beauty.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Artists and architects from around the globe came together to create the breathtaking Snow Show in Finland, an exhibit that pushes the limits of creativity and form-and that will serve as the centerpiece for the Winter Olympics in Turin in '06. Using only snow and ice, the participants created 17 structures that bridge the gap between architecture and art. The variety of works is impressive, ranging from a sprawling series of winding tunnels and slides to a freestanding cube of harvested ice. Many of the structures invite participation, allowing visitors to climb inside, explore and play. This dynamic relationship between the work and the viewers makes the Snow Show more than simply an art exhibit, but unfortunately, it is also one of the reasons why this inspiring project does not translate well into book form. The photographs are impressive, and the notes and sketches that the designers offer at the end are fascinating. But the awe-inspiring grandness of the works cannot be adequately captured on the page (and certainly not in a book of this small format). Nevertheless, the volume will be of interest to art and architecture enthusiasts, and will inspire more than a few readers to witness the beauty of these structures firsthand. 233 illustrations, 111 in color.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect gift!!, May 6, 2005
This review is from: The Snow Show (Hardcover)
I received The Snow Show as a gift and I love it.

It documents an architectural/artistic exhibition in Lapland. Teams of two, one artist and one architect designed and built temporary structures of snow and ice.

The book is primarily comprised of color photographs of the projects. The pictures of the structures, made of snow and ice, with the sun coming through are just breath-taking. They are incredibly beautiful. At the back, each project is elaborated on: The teams, the concepts and processes, including working drawings and photographs.

The book is sooo great, I can't imagine how amazing it must have been in real life. Anyone would enjoy it, architects, artists and laypeople.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Snow Show Is An Incredible Book, May 13, 2005

This review is from: The Snow Show (Hardcover)
Every once in a while, a monumental art event takes place that makes us rethink what can be done to explore mans creative spirit. The Snow Show was one of those rare events that revealed a new vision. The Snow Show combined world-renowned artists and architects in a collaboral effort to create a visual delight. This show will be reflected upon for years to come. There is something almost mystical that happened when ice, light and flames were combined together. The Snow Show book presents this incredible event with beautiful photos and thoughtful narration. It is well designed and very comprehensive. I especially enjoyed the explanations and photos of how the structures were actually built. The Snow Show book is more than just an art book; it explores a beautiful idea with jaw-dropping photography. I wish I could have attended the event. This book does a superb job of recording what happened.
