Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3-Because of a snow day, Emily has extra time to decide on a topic for her school report. She invites her new friend from California over to play, and Marietta suggests that they make a snow town to prevent the neighborhood boys from throwing snowballs at them. In this easy reader set in 18-point type, Bliss uses short sentence structure and repetition to describe the classmates as they make a snow fort, snow town, snow money, and even a snow restaurant with spaghetti and snowballs. Emily finally decides that snow is a topic worthy of a school report. Readers will enjoy the turn from throwing snowballs to a cooperative arrangement due to the cleverness of a child who has never experienced winter. Poydar's colorful illustrations show a multiethnic gathering of friends enjoying the day off from school. Beginning readers who are ready for longer tales than Roy McKie and P. D. Eastman's Snow (Beginner, 1962) will take to this day-off-from-school story with as much eagerness as an official snow day.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute and clever book about friendship and a snow day., November 16, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Snow Day (Step into Reading, Step 2, paper) (Paperback)
I read this book to my 5 and 6 year old boys, and in spite of the fact that it is about two girls, they listened to every word and laughed a lot. We first read "The Shortest Kid in the World" by the same author, which they equally enjoyed. The characters in both books are the same; clever and funny stories about friendship and overcoming certain childhood insecurities. Great books for boys and girls alike - especially emerging young readers. I will read these both to my son's first grade class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Girls can be empowered by Snow Days, February 2, 2008
Emily is hoping for a Snow Day tomorrow so she doesn't have to figure out what topic to choose for a report for class. But with snow comes -- unfortunately -- boys armed with snowballs. Emily's classmate, Marietta, figures out her own purposeful way around that situation. An interesting twist to the typical Snow Day scenario that should prove fun for young Step 2 Beginning Readers.
