Was this for adults or teenagers?,
By
This review is from: Snow White: (Paperback)
I read recently that the fastest growing demographic for reading is the "YA" (young adult) catergory. As I was reading this book I couldn't help but wonder if that's who THIS book was written for. This is an extremely sad story, especially since the main character is only nine years old. This was also a pretty short story at 207 pages (Amazon has 288 for some strange reason). Those were the two main reason I didn't feel this story. Maybe because the story centered around the extremely abusive life of a very young girl, but I just felt Anna skipped on a lot on the telling of her (Journey's) story. As I stated earlier if this would have been written for a younger crowd then I probably wouldn't feel this way. There are some pretty graphic sexual scenes in this book that do push it into the grown-up catergory. The story opens with Journey taking care of her mother with her uncle stopping by to help out. Unfortunately, the hidden meanings in "medicine" and "uncle" will break your heart. You can't help BUT feel bad for Journey. What she goes through would despair most adults... but to force that lifestyle on a child? Vince is a demon straight from the seven rings of hell. Journey is an innocent soul who grows up around the imps of hell. Journey's mom should have been sterile. The potential was there for this to be a really good story but things just pretty much simmered and (at least for me) never got hot. This is, in no way, a slight or diss on Anna J. Only an honest review from a long time fan. For the record, Anna usually does brings the pain. She said she wanted to try something different with this book. Unfortunately, for this reader, it didn't go over well. I hope her next books are written with the same magic that her earlier books were.

Missed the mark...,
This review is from: Snow White: (Paperback)
Before I start..I am a fan of Anna J's and have read all her work, but this story missed the mark. Anna didn't give enough background information on Journey and I have a 9 yr old..some of the things Journey was doing just wasn't that realistic to me. The story jumped around a lot as well and there were some inconsistencies in the story. I know she was trying something different but this one missed the mark for me.

Anna J is back with a vivid and gripping tale that will cause your head to spin. With realistic characters that draws pure emotion from the reader at will. I found myself cringing at the realism and detail of the story. Journey goes on a journey that no 9 years old should ever have to take. Yes, this is a street tale, but one of a different caliber. Anna put a whole new spin on survival in the hood. Just when you think you have it figured out Anna throws you under the bus. This is one I wholeheartedly recommend to new and old readers alike. Kudos Anna J on spinning a fantastic tale.
