Was this for adults or teenagers?,
By
This review is from: Snow White: (Paperback)
I read recently that the fastest growing demographic for reading is the "YA" (young adult) catergory. As I was reading this book I couldn't help but wonder if that's who THIS book was written for. This is an extremely sad story, especially since the main character is only nine years old. This was also a pretty short story at 207 pages (Amazon has 288 for some strange reason). Those were the two main reason I didn't feel this story. Maybe because the story centered around the extremely abusive life of a very young girl, but I just felt Anna skipped on a lot on the telling of her (Journey's) story. As I stated earlier if this would have been written for a younger crowd then I probably wouldn't feel this way. There are some pretty graphic sexual scenes in this book that do push it into the grown-up catergory. The story opens with Journey taking care of her mother with her uncle stopping by to help out. Unfortunately, the hidden meanings in "medicine" and "uncle" will break your heart. You can't help BUT feel bad for Journey. What she goes through would despair most adults... but to force that lifestyle on a child? Vince is a demon straight from the seven rings of hell. Journey is an innocent soul who grows up around the imps of hell. Journey's mom should have been sterile. The potential was there for this to be a really good story but things just pretty much simmered and (at least for me) never got hot. This is, in no way, a slight or diss on Anna J. Only an honest review from a long time fan. For the record, Anna usually does brings the pain. She said she wanted to try something different with this book. Unfortunately, for this reader, it didn't go over well. I hope her next books are written with the same magic that her earlier books were.

Missed the mark...,
This review is from: Snow White: (Paperback)
Before I start..I am a fan of Anna J's and have read all her work, but this story missed the mark. Anna didn't give enough background information on Journey and I have a 9 yr old..some of the things Journey was doing just wasn't that realistic to me. The story jumped around a lot as well and there were some inconsistencies in the story. I know she was trying something different but this one missed the mark for me.

Raw and Uncut,
By
This review is from: Snow White: (Paperback)
Anna J is back with a vivid and gripping tale that will cause your head to spin. With realistic characters that draws pure emotion from the reader at will. I found myself cringing at the realism and detail of the story. Journey goes on a journey that no 9 years old should ever have to take. Yes, this is a street tale, but one of a different caliber. Anna put a whole new spin on survival in the hood. Just when you think you have it figured out Anna throws you under the bus. This is one I wholeheartedly recommend to new and old readers alike. Kudos Anna J on spinning a fantastic tale.

Not What I Expected,
By Lesa Jones E.J "~~Lesa!~~" (Milwaukee, WI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Snow White: (Paperback)
Ok I am going to start off by saying I like Anna J's books she's a great author but, not so into this book as I thought. I thought it was going to be great with a A plus plus to it but, it was a somewhat ok. Wont knock to story line at all. I like that it was mostly done in a childs point of view of things starting at 9 Journey was doing things I wouldn't ever thought of a child ever doing at her age.Her mom was a crackhead dying for AIDS so she was mainly been taken care of by her crazy uncle Vince that I totally didn't like he was a nasty man that had a thang for little kids OMG. Now Vince is a drug dealer that mainly has his crew but one man Streets he mainly having sex with Street's childs mom and then getting her hooked on the Snow White in the process. Now there is Bunz he is a big time killer that just dont care who he kills he just don't want not witness. There is Khalid him and Journey ends up growing up together and being a little couple. They fall for each other and Journey decides to tell him a secret about herself and she thought things was going to change between them but, it didn't they end up growing up together but, still Vince was still doing his thang with Journey and yet Journey haven't said, a word to Khalid. Overall it was alright but, wishing it was more. But, I am still going to be a Anna J fan.

This book was soooooooooo underdevelop and very unbelievable OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will admit it has some parts in it that was good but come on ... it just seem as if it was a rushed job no character development and these kids were way too mature for their age. It was very choppy, now I have read other books by this author and they were relatively good but I am so dissapointed and I try so hard not to be crucial but this book was just not good

Journeyless!,

This review is from: Snow White: (Paperback)
9-year old Journey has been dealt a hard deal in life. She is forced to take care of her AIDS afflicted mother who is addicted to Snow White, which is supplied by her not so nice Uncle Vince. This book is definitely not what we are used to seeing from Anna J, but a good one just the same. I could not put it down, because I just had to see the outcome of Journey's life...and what a tragic ending it was.

So Deep...had me on the edge at the end,
This review is from: Snow White: (Paperback)
Honestly, I know Anna on a personal level and I never knew my homie wrote like this. As I was reading where the story was taking place, I knew exactly what part of Philly she was talking about. There are kids out there that go through these types of lifestyles. Also, I don't care what anyone thinks, the book was off the chain!!!! Will definitely read this book again before I give it back to her bestie.

Snow White: Survival Dud,
By
This review is from: Snow White: (Paperback)
This survival story is of nine year old Journey Clayton. Not only is her mother bedridden with AIDS, but is also addicted to what the streets call Snow White. In constant fear of her mother dying and ultimately being placed in the foster care system, small Journey does whatever she has to do to prolong their survival. Her father's brother, Uncle Vince, is the only other family that Journey has. He keeps food in the house, clothes on her back, and stops by every few days with her mother's twice daily fix. He drills in her head that nothing comes for free, so in return for what he provides he demands Journey perform sexual favors among other things. There is a light at the end of the tunnel for Journey in the form of her classmate and neighbor Khalid. They grow close, share secrets about their mothers, and fall in love. More in love than any two nine years old could possibly be. Unfortunately this part of the story line falls short because of it's intensity. These children are unrealistically and significantly more mature than their peers and have the mentality of adults. It is definitely sensible to expect Journey to be more grown up than others her age due to what she has endured, but her frame of mind surpasses anything practical. This dark and twisty tale isn't only about poor Journey. We voyeuristically weave in and out of the lives of her uncle while he attempts to flood the streets with Snow White, and Khalid's parents, Joey Street and Shanyce. Khalid's parents are only together because of him and when Joey finally acknowledges that his woman is allowing half the town to visit their bedroom, things hit the fan. They clearly have their issues but Mr. Joey just wants what is best for his son. All in all, it was definitely interesting to follow the lives of these deceitful people in hopes of seeing what becomes of the entire cast of characters. |
