4.0 out of 5 stars A Disturbing Childhood Productions Classic, November 13, 2000
This review is from: Snow White & Red Rose [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This bizarre German fairytale, released in the USA in a dubbed form by 'Childhood Productions', is fantastic viewing, provided that you've got a twisted sense of humour. The Plot concerns an evil dwarf called RedBeard ( the film isn't exactly PC ), who is a strong believer in the redistribution of wealth. When a prince gets in his way, he turns the royal into a bear, and the rest of the story is basically Snow White and Rose Red trying to protect the bear from hunters, and the bear trying to kill RedBeard. Irritating comic relief comes in the form of 'King Nitwit', a character who you will want to kill slowly and painfully half-way into this film. The film is pretty disturbing, but the sets are great (especially the little house which Snow and Rose live in). Perhaps the best thing is the drug-addled soundtrack, which was stuck in my head for weeks. All in all, a great movie, as long as you treat as serious as it sounds.

4.0 out of 5 stars Twisted Fairy Tale Indeed!!!!, January 31, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Snow White & Red Rose [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Be prepared for this one! I grew up watching these "Childhood Production" on Saturday morning TV, and was always facinated by the sets, location scenery, obvious dubbing, the little bits of story narration from Paul Tripp, and musical scores. I have not seen this one in ages and it totally blew my mind. For one thing, I do not remember the LSD-inspired score and the opening song, sung by what sounds like a bunch of dememted children. This is only the beginning of a very surreal and dream-like experience! Video quality seems a bit washed-out, but that might be the print it was struck from. Grab a bunch a friends, some good food, a well-stocked bar, and sit back and enjoy this most strange film.
