4.0 out of 5 stars Multiple learning book has space reserved on any shelf
Happening across this book by chance, I was entranced by the image projected from the cover, and hoped more filled the pages. This story, whether or not a remake of a classic, holds it's own as a historic impression of 1920's New York, and a marvelous graphic lesson in Art Deco for all children, and indeed everyone short of the privelage of experiencing the era...

2.0 out of 5 stars Stylish but morbid
I bought this book to give as a gift, but it's too morbid to be a nice gift.

Happening across this book by chance, I was entranced by the image projected from the cover, and hoped more filled the pages. This story, whether or not a remake of a classic, holds it's own as a historic impression of 1920's New York, and a marvelous graphic lesson in Art Deco for all children, and indeed everyone short of the privelage of experiencing the era first-person.

A very light-reader, there is nothing involved to evade anyone's attention, and everything to deliver fuel to the imagination for what this glamorous and dramatic world was at the time, and lent to art and society thereafter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Art Deco version of Snow White, June 28, 2011

Wonderful graphics in imaginative style, set in the jazz age in New York. First read the hardback in the public library in Iowa City to my kids. Later, had to find my own copy cause it haunted me. Just found the paperback, but it is still same high quality and beautiful art.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rewrite of Snow White, less details than the original, but in a good way, July 4, 2008
This review is from: Snow White in New York (Paperback)
I haven't read this book with my nieces yet, but I intend to.

This is a pared down rewrite of the Snow White story (and we all know that story) set in the 1920s. Great artwork, and simple writing, perfect for kids who want a little thrill.

4.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative concept and stunning artwork, August 7, 2011

This imaginative retelling of the classic "Snow White" story features our heroine as a nightclub singer, the Seven Dwarfs recast as seven jazzmen, and the handsome prince as a dashing newspaper reporter. It's a little short on the textual details; the true "star" of this book is the stunning artwork of nightclubbers against a 1920s deco-era New York City. Because the text is pretty simple and the illustrations pretty bold, it can be read to the younger set, as long as they're not so young as to be scared by the Queen of the Underworld ordering her gangster henchmen to take Snow White downtown and shoot her, or the scenes of Snow White waking up in her coffin. However, I think the book will be best appreciated by older children and adults who can appreciate the depictions of the artwork and the clever twists in the original tale - for example, the evil Queen likes to see herself in the "New York Mirror", a newspaper, rather than in a magic mirror on the wall. I also liked that the author made the prince a reporter, instead of just leaving him as a prince, which would have certainly fit the 1920s setting - there were plenty of princes around on the social scene then.

As a dedicated watcher of old Turner Classic Movies, I loved this book and, having first bought the paperback, am planning to get a more expensive hardback version. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that it's pretty short, and I wished it had been longer!
