Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

"This new series is designed to teach outdoor skills to women in the way they learn. . . . Women of all ages describe how they overcame obstacles, what they enjoyed the most, or just how they felt about undertaking a new activity . . . extremely well done and appealing." --Library Journal (starred review)

A Woman's Guide to the Hottest Sport on Snow

The snowboarding boom is taking over mountain resorts everywhere. And it's not just seen as a badboy sport anymore. Women are doing it in record numbers, from the U.S. to Europe to Japan.

Why? Snowboards are like sportscars: High performance in a small package, which makes them super fun to drive--connecting turns, boosting airs in the park, chasing fresh powder tracks in the morning, and taking on steeps, chutes, bumps, even the backcountry.

Now Julia Carlson--former national champion, world cup competitor, coach, and leading snowboard designer--has written the first book that's jam-packed with practical advice specially tooled for women of all ages.

Get the most out of the snowboarding experience with Carlson's savvy advice and on-point instructions. Find the right board for your size and riding style. Get boots that are really designed for female feet. Hit the slopes at your own pace, cautious or daring! Connect turns in a day or two at most. Carve everything from steeps to powder. Tune your board. Handle any trail with confidence.

Snowboarding: A Woman's Guide has a ton of practical advice on how to get started . . . step-by-step instructions and drills . . . equipment choices . . . family-style boarding . . . and personal tips from all kinds of real live women snowboarders--Olympians Betsy Shaw and Barrett Christy, clothing expert Ali Napolitano, shop owner Stacie Genchi, and plenty of first-timers. Like Carlson says, "The styles are incredibly different, but the stoke is always the same. So, welcome!"

This book really helped me prepare for my first day snowboarding. I used a lot of the techniques presented on my first day. The authors gives great tips and there are tons of photos. She explains everything really well. There is also a section on what to look for when buying equipment which will come in handy once you get better at snowboarding. It is a great book for women because it is written for women from a woman's point of view. Extremely helpfull!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best guides to women's snowboarding, April 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Snowboarding: A Woman's Guide (Ragged Mountain Press Woman's Guides) (Paperback)
When I went searching for a book on snowboarding, I didn't want just any book, written by any person. I went in search of a guide written by women for women. This has to be the best guide for not only beginning women boarders, but also for experienced boarders looking to refine their skills. The book takes a very basic approach to boarding, then gradually challenges you to get you just that one step closer to being better. Some of the topics include: Information about all Women camps, what you need to prepare yourself - clothing, equipment, etc., what to expect on the slopes, explains the different style of boarding and what might work best for you, how to take care and store your boots, boards and clothes...endless tips for just aout everything you can think of. I would definitely recommend this book to any and every woman boarder I meet. Ride like a girl.

This book has help me a lot, and kept me from giving up! The photos in the book is very helpful for me to visualize the body position. The text is simple and clear, without extra useless words. The book made snowboarding sound really fun and interesting, which encouraged me a lot when I went through hard time learning the sport. I really like the fact that this book was written for women by a woman. Afterall, women do snowboard differently than men!
