Katie knows lots of good games, but no one wants to play with her. As hard as she tries, she never quite fits in. PreSchool-Grade 2-While spring, summer, and autumn pass, lonely, left-out Katie watches other children play in the park. Bad timing, shyness, and minor blunders keep her on the sidelines. When snow blankets the city, Katie does not even try to join her peers playing winter sports. Instead, she embarks on a creative project of her own-building a snowman so small she calls it a snowchild. Before long the snowchild has a friend and so does Katie. All ends happily as the youngsters build more snowfriends and find themselves included in the circle of playmates. The realistic line drawings are washed with watercolors that suggest the changing light of the seasons and illuminate the little girl's moods. Expressive, active figures and imaginative use of props add resonance to the text and suggest a life for the characters beyond the pages of the book. A warm diversion for a winter afternoon.

Finding Yourself,

Debi Gliori's book, The Snowchild, is a moving story that teaches children to express themselves instead of trying to be who other people want you to be. In the story, Katie is noticably different than her peers. Because of this, her peers make fun of her and abandon her. As the story exposes, if Katie changed who she was in order to fit in, she would have lost the chance to make her own dreams come true and find true friendship. She doesn't. One morning, after a brilliant snowfall, she walks past her peers and finds her own space in order to do what no one else is doing, build a snowman. By expressing her uniqueness, she meets her true friend and soulmate! This is a great story to impress upon your children and to remind adults that every created person has unique gifts and talents to give to the world and that we should honor our children's unique gifts instead of pressuring them into fitting in.
