Engine 88 - Snowman (Caroline)
San Francisco's Engine 88's follow up to their critically acclaimed debut album "Clean Your Room" is an exciting slab of strictly off-centre power pop. Askew lyrics abound - the opener "Ballerina" and the single "Seconal" wander into the territory once held dear by the Pixies before they lost the plot, but Engine 88 are no copycats. Next single "Manclub" sees to that. It sounds like nothing else, a cross-dressing, anti-fridge song that'll leave you with a smile on your face and your finger on the repeat button.

Production, courtesy of Tim O'Heir, is spot on throughout, and if the band isn't careful they're going to have a huge hit on their hands. A "Doolittle" for the `90s, perhaps?

Engine 88's first album 'Clean Your Room' is one of my favorite discs. Tom Barnes lyrics are amazing. They somehow manage to be wonderfully simple and non-sensical without being trite. I'm not sure how these guys managed to fly under everyone's radar, but I'm certainly glad that I got the opportunity to hear them.

In 'Snowman', the guys pick up nicely where 'Clean Your Room' left off. Highlights include: 'Ballerina', 'Cold Blooded', 'Istanbul', 'Snowman' and my personal favorite 'Manclub'. I'd recommend this album to anyone who likes strong power pop songs with catchy hooks.

Engine 88 Snowman is the best combination of Green Day guitar and great lyrics out there. Definately one of the best albums in my CD collection.

MY MOM GOT THE CD AT WORK FOR FREE WHEN THEY DID A CONCERT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WORKED THERE.SHE GOT THEIR AUTOGRAPHS ONIT AND GAVE IT TO ME. I LOVED IE.BALLERINA WAS MY FAVE SONG.
