A great beginner novel for less advanced readers looking for some edge...,
By
This review is from: The Snowman (Paperback)
In my preteens R.L. Stine was probably the one author that monopolized my bookshelf. His `Goosebumps' series was a big hit among the kids my age and we all would sit around and trade books until we had all read every book he'd written in the series. Once that was accomplished we all wanted more, something with more teeth and luckily for us Stine had also written a series of books for the teen reader, books with a little more edge and some more realistic fears.`The Snowman' was the first book I'd read outside of the `Goosebumps' series written by Stine and I must admit to having been hooked. It was not what I expected but in a way I was grateful for that. There were no monsters, demons or ghosts involved, just human terror. It's not that this is a gruesome serial killer type novel, although the main villain is a bit of a serial killer/stalker, but the novel is a much slower paced psychological thriller of sorts. I know, believe me, that that sounds stupid when in reference to a novel of this caliber. It's not a masterpiece by any means and it's in no way shape or form even comparable to the greats or even to the great writers of modern horror and or suspense, but in its own unique way `The Snowman' is somewhat of a stepping stone into deeper, darker more disturbing waters. It's like the `Silence of the Lambs' for beginners, the novel you read before you get into the better more accessible novels. So, in closing, if you're an avid reader of more advanced better written horror and or literature in general then steer clear away from this novel, but if you're a young reader wanting to expand your reading library with novels that offer a bit of a bite without devouring you whole then this a great place to start. It'll prepare you for the harsher reality to come.

Not all snowmen are cute,
By Skilpadde "Zombie" (Norway) - See all my reviews

Heather is unhappy. Her guardian treats her poorly and she feels alone. Then Snowman turns up, and the terror commences.I borrowed this book some years ago and was disappointed when I read it. I found it predictable, and it never caught my interest. It should have been exciting but it wasn't. It would have been scary if it happened IRL, but reading about it was no thrill. Nothing more than okay. But it sure gave me nightmares though!

A great way to jumpstart your horror collection!,
By Damian Gunn "The Dark One is I" (I am everywhere) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Snowman (Paperback)
When I was younger I would only read books by R.L. Stine, and `The Snowman' was the first that I read that wasn't of the `Goosebumps' fame. `The Snowman' is an effective thriller for young adults for it really delivers some good chills and tense moments. Heather is living with her Uncle James, a man she can't stand, but when she meets a stranger named Bill her life begins to change. Bill seems to be just what she needed, but Bill does so much more than come between her and her boyfriend, he starts to pick apart her life, body by body. At times downright chilling, `The Snowman' is recommended to any teenager looking to break into more mainstream horror, break away from the docile stuff and read something with a little more backbone. Sure, it's no Stephen King, but this is a good jumpstart.

Snowman,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Snowman (Paperback)
June 4, 2001 If you like action and suspense novels, this would be the one to choose. The Snowman is one of R.L Stine's best books because it is well written and very interesting. I enjoyed this book a lot and it really was one of my favorites. Stopping the book was hard because it was so intense and appealing. I also enjoyed this novel because throughout it, you never knew what was going to happen next and whether someone would die or something would go wrong. In The Snowman, Heather who is a teenage girl, who lives with her aunt and uncle, absolutely can't stand her Uncle James. She wishes him to be dead every day! As soon as Heather meets Bill, who is nicknamed Snowman, she actually was having a better time and wasn't in so much misery anymore with her job and Uncle James. Things didn't get that good anymore though when Ben, Heather's old boyfriend, finds out about Snowman. Everything then got exhilarating as the book got very interesting after Snowman was invited over Heather's for dinner. Something happened, something went terribly wrong. A secret was revealed!

BEST OF R.L. STINE,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Snowman (Paperback)
Usually I don't find R.L. Stine books very interesting. I know who the killer is as soon as I know all the characters. But this book is just great, I loved it. You've heard the plot in the other recomendations. Well, the guy, snowman, just sounds so cute, but you know there's a freaky atmosphere around him. But you can't help yourself getting pulled towards him, he's just too cute and so sweet!!!

borring!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Snowman (Point Horror Series) (Library Binding)
This book was [no good]! The reason why I think The Snowman by R.L.Stine is boring is because nothing happens at all in this book! And besides you know that snowman on the cover, well the book doesn't even have anything to do with a snowman! the only part in the book that has to do with a snowman is that a boy that Heather meets with the nickname of snowman takes Heather to a special and beautiful secret place in the forest next to the park and they got the idea to build a snowman, and that is the only part is the story that has to do with a snowman. So I have no clue why in the world the book is called The Snowman...
