5.0 out of 5 stars Learn more about North America's fastest growing sport, October 6, 1999
This review is from: Snowmobiling: The Sledder's Complete Handbook (Paperback)
Want to learn more about North America's fastest growing winter sport? Need a refresher course on the safe operation of your machine? Or are you tired of getting your sled stuck and spending all day getting it out? Then a new book from the father and son team of Dave and James Hallam called, Snowmobiling - For trail Riding and Mountain Riders, is the handbook for you. This self published book by Fun On Snow Publications is proving to be an indespensable manual that both experienced and novice snowmobilers will find to be an excellent resource. The Hallams have over 44 years of combined experience, so they know of what they speak. "I see so many people starting out in snowmobiling that simply don't really know where to start," stated Dave Hallam from his home in Abbotsford. "So we've designed this book with a strong safety message. A new rider needs to be cautious. They need to learn to enjoy the outdoor experience but also have a healthy respect fro winter's harsh elements." Hallam believes that experienced riders will benefit from their handbook as well. He says,"We all require this kind of solid, basic information because knowledge will always safeguard a snowmobiler. We all want to get out and enjoy the wonderful sport of sledding but at the same time we have to be careful not to get caught up in just the performance aspect of today's high powered machines." This informative book is much more than just a "tips" book. It is written in a clear, easy-to-read style that discusses important subjects such as emergency first aid, avalanche awareness, easy steering setup, how to get unstuck the easy way, focuses on both trail and mountain riding, trouble shooting and much, much more. Over the years Dave and James Hallam have logged thousands of miles on the trails. They believe it is time to give back something to the sport that has brought so much enjoyment over the years.

Strong safety message: Trail riding and mt riding are different and this is why I bought this book. Having both riding styles included in one book got my attention. This book is to the point with many usefull tips acquired by the authors themselves. It is not a performance or repair manual but rather a snowmobiling how to book. However it does cover all the basics. 17 chapters in all and saint johns first aid included. Throw this book in your snowmobile trunk knowing the survival chapter could come in handy.

My husband isn't a big reader and its always a gamble to get him a book as a gift, but this book is great. It is set up in small segments with bold capital titles and it has everything from engine porting to how to make a shelter form the weather. Its small and fits right into his saddle bag on his sled....He has read it through a few times and picked up some things to work on mechanically in his sled and I feel better knowing the emergency tips are traveling with him since he sleds in remote locations. Definitely buy this book for anyone who snowmobiles. You won't be disappointed!

With useful how-to's and great tips on mechanics, safety, clothing, riding technique and trailering, this book is an excellent addition to the club or personal library. The 171-page book is packed with material that is invaluable to snowmobilers. Saint John's Ambulance First Aid is included in the book, as well as avalanche awareness tips, choosing a sled, easy steering set-up, safety and trail manners, emergency survival tips, and much more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Worth Buying, March 4, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Snowmobiling: The Sledder's Complete Handbook (Paperback)
I can usually find some, if not a lot of value in most books I read. But honestly, this book has no redeeming value whatsoever. It's descriptions and advice were so brief and incomplete that I think it could actually be dangerous. I would beg any reader that needed any valuable info on snowmobiles, riding technique, accessories, etc., to look elsewhere. You won't regret it, and it may actually save your life.
PS The amount of extreme positive reviews truly amazes me. I can only assume they are somehow tied in by relationship or business to the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS JUST AWESOME, January 30, 2001

Ed Dever (British Columbia , Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Snowmobiling: The Sledder's Complete Handbook (Paperback)
Who is this guy Karl Bunker anyway?(THE LAST REVIEWER) Supposedly he is a programmer for the Mac computer. What does his experience have to do with Snowmobiling? Obviously he has no experience and not willing to gain any either. I have seen his two book reviews and they are both negative. Now to do with the review he wrote here he has miss quoted his references especially with the following: (How to extract your snowmobile when it gets stuck / tie it to a tree with heavy rope, and hen open throttle slowly) The actual quote from the book is as follows: Track Winch (Tight spots) You can pull your sled out with a rope tied to the front windows of the track. (Illustration shown for clarity) Carry 50' - 75' of 3/8 rope. Once tied to the holes in your track and then secured to a tree, other sled, rock or several people, start your motor and throttle it out very gently. As far as this book is concerned it is full of valuable information. There is even some tips that some experienced snowmobilers will find useful. This book is the only one that I have found with this type of information. The author has made his main emphasis on SAFETY, which is what we all want.

A very easy book to read and comprehend. It is jam packed full of extremely useful tips. We particularly enjoyed the chapters Troubleshooting and Miscellaneous. The authors have really covered it all.
