Book Description

Nicholas Colt’s career as a lead guitarist ended with a crushed hand, and his career as a licensed private investigator ended with a narcotics conviction. Since then, he’s had some luck making money under the table as a “security consultant.” But good luck has a habit of going bad for Colt. Like when he takes the case of an affluent young accountant who has received a threatening letter—a mandate to come and play an ultraviolent video game called Snuff Tag 9.

Colt figures the letter is a scam, but a psychotic four-hundred-pound billionaire known only as Freeze quickly proves him wrong. Freeze, it seems, is populating his version of the game with real people.

Kidnapped and outfitted with a device that will stop his heart if he refuses to join in, Colt finds himself deep in the Okefenokee Swamp hunting—and being hunted by—eight people he has never met, has nothing against…and must kill to survive.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A slightly uneasy blend of elements from The Hunger Games, the movie Crank 2, and the classic Richard Connell short story “The Most Dangerous Game” (to which the author refers early on), the latest Nicholas Colt novel finds the rock star turned private investigator captured by a wealthy nut-case and forced to compete in a real-world version of a murderous online game, Snuff Tag 9, the object of which is to kill all your opponents or be killed. The book really shouldn’t work as well as it does. The premise is not exactly fresh, and there are some really implausible elements—combatants are fitted with special defibrillators that will kill them if they don’t play by the rules, which Crank 2 fans will recognize as a light twist on that movie’s killer ingredient—and the villain is so over the top that you can’t help picturing him wringing his hands and drooling a little. But, thanks mostly to the book’s narrator, the disgruntled, wisecracking Colt, and to the author’s enthusiastic writing style, readers should have a good time with this one. It’s not meant to be taken too seriously anyway, so put aside the nitpickery and enjoy the show.

"Pure, batshit crazy awesome."--Anthony Neil Smith, author of All The Young Warriors

5.0 out of 5 stars Hunger Games meets The Most Dangerous Game October 3, 2012
Format:MP3 CD|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Nicholas Colt is a defrocked PI hired by Nathan Broadway to investigate a mysterious letter inviting him to participate in a game of Snuff Tag 9; Actually, not so much an invitation but rather a Command Performance. He's instructed to show up at a designated place in the Florida Everglades on October 11th at 8PM. The letter further informs him that if he does not show up or if he shows the letter to anyone he will die.

Convinced that this is a scam, a joke or a ploy to get Broadway out of his home so possibly robbers can raid the house while he's away on this wild goose chase Colt takes the case. On Wikipedia, Colt finds that the Electronic Game version of Snuff Tag 9 is listed as the most popular video game on the planet. He further reads that as a player there are 999 possible characters that you can choose to be. You are then pitted against eight other players.

You are randomly given 2 weapons from a group of 10: a length of tow chain; a slingshot; a survival knife; a nightstick; a set of brass knuckles; a pair of nunchucks; a stun gun; a can of mace; a bullwhip and a fifty-caliber blowgun with three darts.

Your object is simple enough; you must kill the other 8 players. If you do, you win. If one of them kills you, you lose. An MC named Freeze, a billionaire sadist, orchestrates the battles and keeps the players in line. Colt goes to the meeting place at the assigned time and is greeted with the head of Nathan Broadway sans body. So begins this adventure that will keep you burning the midnight oil and turning pages far into the night.

The book is packed with adventures and exploits in its 250 pages that make it short enough to be a good airplane read but long enough to give you a lot of bang for your buck. Snuff Tag 9 is a well written version of a time tested premise brought up to date by the inventive mind of author Jude Hardin. I'm looking forward to more from Jude.

4.0 out of 5 stars Killer November 28, 2012
Format:MP3 CD|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This fast paced thriller sees rock star turned disgraced private eye cum "security consultant" NIcholas Colt drawn into a diabolical game orchestrated by a malignant billionaire. Colt take the case of a nervous accountant who receives a letter demanding his participation in a reenactment of a violent video game. The penalty for ignoring the invitation is death. Colt dismisses the letter as either a joke or a ruse to facilitte a burglary. He does agree to go to the site himself. Once there he realizes that this is no joke and he is forced in a kill or be killed struggle with other participants. Although seemingly outmatched by his younger opponents' physical prowess, Colt relies on a resourcefulness gained from years of experience. When his estranged wife is forced into the game, he makes it his mission to win at all costs.

This was a tightly written, suspenseful tale. I was rooting for Colt. I was glad that Juliet, the wife, was not reduced to a hand wringing damsel in the distress. She proved as intelligent and courageous as her husband. The language is strong and the violence graphic, although probably not much worse than an average night of Criminal Minds and CSI. That being said, it is definitely not for the faint of heart or stomach.

I recommend this exciting book. It is a fast read that will entertain til the end. Well done.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shades of "The Most Dangerous Game" December 4, 2012
Format:MP3 CD|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Quite a bit unbelievable but definitely exciting enough to keep me turning the pages, "Snuff Tag 9" tells the story of a whacko billionaire who decides to bring his favorite video game to gruesome, gory life.

Nicholas Colt (who definitely has had some bad luck in his life) happens to catch the billionaire's attention and ends up in the middle of a real-life game of Snuff Tag 9.

Blood, guts, exploding eyeballs, cameras, defibrillator devices to keep the contestants in line - all of these are bad enough and then Freeze (the billionaire) decides to make the game personal to Colt.

A quick, exciting read but not for the faint of heart...

5.0 out of 5 stars Life or Death November 21, 2012
Author, Jude Hardin does it again with his third novel in the Nicholas Colt thriller series. Once again the reader is taken on a thrill ride from beginning to end.
The protagonist of these novels, Nicholas Colt is a weathered man who has seen more than his share of life's storms. In Snuff Tag 9 he finds himself facing yet another life or death situation. It is revealed in the first novel Pocket-47 that Nicholas Colt was the sole survivor of a plane crash that killed his wife and child along with his entire band. Through his series of novels author Jude Hardin reveals a kick ass character with substantial depth of spirit. Nicholas' will to survive in any given situation leaves one to wonder, where does this weathered soul find all his inner strength??? Nicholas is proof that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

In Snuff Tag 9 Nick finds himself in what he thought would be an open a shut case. In and out...and on with life. Not so! In the blink of an eye Nick finds himself once again facing a life or death situation. I prefer not to give much detail about the story line. I want the reader to experience it himself. I promise you though Snuff Tag 9 will keep you on the edge of your seat. I even found myself screaming out loud at one point!

I have found myself quite smitten with the Nicholas Colt character. I definitely see "movie" written all over these novels. Move over Die Hard fans ...Nicholas is in town. I find myself thoroughly pleased after each read and eagerly awaiting Nicholas' next adventure. You can't help but bond with this character and find yourself routing for him all the way! Awesome read! Thanks Jude Hardin! Yes, yes, yes I highly recommend this novel.
