Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-As evening settles over the jungle, baby animals stop their play and settle down for the night, snuggling close to their parents. Soft, full-spread illustrations in pastels capture the warmth and coziness of the families as night draws near. The gentle tone and rhyming couplets make this a good choice for toddler storytimes and bedtime reading aloud.-Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY

I bought this book for the illustrations, they are simply adorable, and I would love to give it five stars just for that, but I can't. The trouble is the text, every page rhymes -- except for one -- it's like stubbing your toe in the book each time you read it. At first it made me laugh, then it started to annoy me when I read the book again and again to my daughter, as it disrupts the soothing rhythm found in most bedtime books. Why one page doesn't rhyme I don't know, but sadly it lessens my enjoyment of this book.

I love this book for a "goodnight" book. I espically like that this has a padded exterior and the pages are boards. Our original one was a hardback with paper pages and the babies like to rip them, sadly.

This is a sweet bedtime story with gorgeous illustrations and appealing rhymes. My son is just a baby, but he loves looking at the pictures as I read to him.

I think we've had this book since my daughter was born and we've read it consistently (but not constantly) over the past three years. The illustrations are warm and inviting and offer up cozy and snuggle-up type imagery all the way through. It has a nice rythmic flow to the story with one GLARING exception.

We're reading along about how "in the soft, swampy mud baby hippo, so snug, cuddles up close for a big hippo hug" and then we get hammered a few pages later with, "Bold leopard cubs rest from practicing roars. They snuggle together, all tired, tangled paws." What was the author thinking? It really does just put a black mark on the overall impression of the book.

I guess it bothers me that I don't know the reason for why that one page is so off!! Of course, my daughter doesn't seem to mind, but as an adult it bugs the heck out of me. Thank goodness the illustrator conjures up lovely calming images, so that I can let go of my frustration over that one crazy page.

My 18 month old daughter had the paperback version of this book and destroyed it so I opted to get the board book version and I couldn't be happier! The book is larger than the average board book and has a padded cover. The pages are thinner cardstock so they can still be bent although not as bad as paper pages. The pages are very easy for her to turn and she loves the story.

The story is about all the jungle animals getting ready for bed and the illustrations are eye catching and engaging and use beautiful colors, especially on the sunset illustrations. The variety of jungle animals such as hippos, lions, porcupines, gazelles, etc is also a great vocabulary builder. This is our go to bedtime story every night and at the end all the animals fall asleep which is a nice transition for telling your child it's time for bed. A++ story and illustrations!

We have a lot of books in our toddler's library, and this book is one of its treasures because it combines beautiful illustration with rhythm, rhyme, and alliteration. We started reading this book to our son when he was around 6 months old.

The illustrations are soothing and very sweet. As an infant, my son would stroke the backs of the antelopes and reach out to the yawning baby tigers. If I could snuggle a book, I would snuggle this one. Beyond the illustrations, the book has a wonderful rhyme and rhythm, with soothing alliteration in a few places. The words have a wonderful flow -- perfect for bedtime. Yes, "roar" and "paw" do not rhyme, and that stinks, but I just roar in a way that rhymes with "paw" and it all works out :)

This book is high on my list of favorite bedtime books -- second only to "Goodnight Moon."
