Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

This book is based on the familiar game So Big or How Bigis Baby? It uses repetition and imitation with a triumphant finale in which the parent and child answer the question "how big is baby?" by announcing : Sooooo big! The book features Baby Elmo and a big pop-up of Elmo with his arms spread wide across two pages at the end.

My son is 6 months old and this is his favorite book by far. He likes all the books I read to him, but when he sees this book he gets really excited. He kicks his feet, smiles and "talks" to the pictures and reaches out to touch them. He has a lot of books, but this is the only book that he gets this excited about. If I bring out a stack of books to read to him, he reaches for this one above the others. He especially likes the last page with the pop-up. The images on the pages are very big and simple, and each page is a different color. I think that's why he likes it so much. Other books have too many pictures on the pages and the colors are not as bright and bold. I think the big simple pictures and bright bold colors are more interesting for babies of my son's age. I'm going to buy some other books in the Sesame Beginnings series since he likes this one so much. I even went out and bought him a little Elmo doll so he can hold it while we read his favorite book! He loves it!

I bought this book to keep our 18-month-old busy during a roadtrip. She LOVES Elmo and was not disappointed by this book. The story is very simple, and the illustrations are very bright and engaging. The only down-side is that the pop-up of Elmo at the end of the book tears pretty easily. I would recommend this book for toddlers and preschoolers. Keep in mind, though that you may want to keep an eye on your little one when reading it so the book doesn't get ruined.

Elmo So Big is a wonderful first book. Both of my two kids loved it starting around 6 months of age to about 18 months. The book portrays simple everyday activities and motions that the baby or toddler can relate to and imitate. I also believe my kids loved the book so much because of the color scheme-simple with a lot of contrast. While kids lose interest in the book beyond 2 years old, it is still worth having for the early smiles, giggles and learning.

My daughter LOVES Elmo and I was excited to find this book for her for C-mas. She thought the Elmo pop-up was the greatest thing she ever saw. She laughed and smiled and hugged and kissed him. We took this with us on a plane trip and it helped her settle down since she could not get down and play on the floor. The content is good for this age and now when we get to the page about the things Elmo says, she will repeat me. And she will point to the other things Elmo does on the other pages. She's almost 10 months and we let her pick out her own bedtime stories and it's almost always this book, or one of Roger Priddy's book. I higly recommend this book -- it was way too cute and babies love it!

This has been my son's favorite book since he was 7-months old. He points to the pictures of Elmo doing familiar baby things like eating a banana, saying mama, playing peekaboo, and drinking from a sippy cup. But the highlight of this story is the last page-a big pop-up of Elmo. My baby smiles and gets excited every time we get near the back of the book because he knows it's coming! You and your baby will have a lot of fun with this book and it is sure to be a hit as a gift. But sadly the pop-up does tear easily. My dad was reading it to my son one day, and I noticed he tried to cover up a tear by taping part of it back together again!

One read of this book, and your infant will be flapping his hands, wiggling his feet, and grabbing for one more read of "So Big." My son is wide-eyed as we turn turn the pages to see Baby Elmo sip from a cup, take a bite, stand up straight and hold on tight. You think that "So Big" can't get any better until you get to the last page. SPOILER ALERT: The last page of the book is a life-size version of baby Elmo popping up from the pages. He is literally "So Big." I think my son's head might explode from excitement every time we get to this page. Elmo delivers in this soon-to-be classic you won't want to miss.

I bought this for my 6 month old grandson who likes Elmo on Sesame Street and he loves it! He listens as you read and waits for that big pop-up ( and it's sturdy pop-up too for little grabbing hands) at the end, now that he knows it is coming. Any book that can catch and hold the attention of a 6 month old is one for the record books. Now I wish Sesame Street/Random House would publish more than just a few books in this "Sesame Beginnings" for 6 to 12 month olds...the little ones will love the books if we can bring them to them.

My son is 7 months and loves this book. This says a lot since I can't get him to hold still to change his diaper - yet he will sit and let me read him this book over and over. Great for learning bye-bye, peek a boo, and mama/dada and the 'pop-up' Baby Elmo at the end is great and always gets a baby laugh! I am actually going to buy a couple of copies as gifts as well as some of the other books in the series. I highly recommend this book!
