5.0 out of 5 stars Don't pass this one up, August 17, 2002
This review is from: So Black, So Bright (Audio CD)
First off, I don't get much into independed music. I just don't have the patience to go to small clubs and bars to check people out, although they may be great. Well thankfully, Linford and Karin (of Over the Rhine) decided to bring Kim along to open some of their concerts last year. I heard Kim and was hooked. Amazed. She was just SO good! Very similiar in some ways to Over the Rhine in sound. But Kim's voice does have its differences, which make this album sort of Folk/Jazz (strange combination, but very succesfully done here). She has a small vibratto that is very jazzy. not opera vibratto, but jazz vibratto. And very subtle.

Lyrically, this woman's got it down! Although you may mistake her for over the Rhine on first listen, if you listen to the lyrics, you will hear a difference. She's not playing off OtR's success or style--she's making it her own with her additions. She's got her own style of writing, and it's great!

I really can't say enough about this album. I waited for almost a year for this album to be released, and I've certainly NOT been dissapointed in my purchase. Now I can't wait for her next album! If you pass this album up, you are only doing yourself a diss-service.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!!, April 18, 2006
This review is from: So Black, So Bright (Audio CD)
One of the great Cincinnati traditions is the yearly Over the Rhine concert. Each year Linford and Karin put on a great concert and almost always introduce us to a new artist. The 2005 concert brought us Kim Taylor. Well actually we saw Kim a few weeks earlier too for the Drunkard's Prayer release concert and my wife and I were so excited to Kim returned for the Christmas show.

If Kim doesn't become a major artist it won't be from lack of talent or showmanship. Her voice is velvet sweet but there's steel underneath. This woman can flat out sing! Her songs are wistful, haunting, and subtle. There aren't any riffs or choruses that immediately stick in the mind but they stick in the head anyway.

If you are a fan of Over the Rhine, Hem, or the Cowboy Junkies you'll love this album.
