Book Description

The Double Threat series follows Meg’s crazy world as she navigates high school. She finds love, loses love, finds it again all the while dealing with backstabbing friends, shitty dates, and the inevitable boy problems. She also has an amazing cast of friends who are funky, fun, witty, loyal, and downright goofy. Imagine the Pink Ladies in modern times. This is the Double Threat Crew!

* * *

In this fun-filled, fast-moving young adult romantic comedy, sassy fourteen-year-old Megan Miller, and her close-knit friends, begin their four year high school journey. Expectations and hopes are high for their Freshman year. Meggie wants nothing more than to experience all high school has to offer – growing freedom, hot boys, parties, make-out sessions, and did I mention hot boys?

Enter Alex Aguilar. At seventeen, he is Carver High’s sports superstar and dreamy superstud. Yet, despite the hype, Alex is undeniably sweet, and Meggie is beyond smitten. But, of course, he is a SENIOR. So, ought to be completely off limits for a ninth grader, right? Age doesn’t always dictate whom you will love, though. So I’m A Double Threat is the start of their journey.

Will young love survive the challenges presented them or is friendship all they can only really hope for? Backs will be stabbed, hearts will be broken, tears will be shed. But, despite this, Meggie’s strong-willed determination, loyalty, and zest for fun will ensure the ride is a memorable one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Didn't like all the alcohol parties and language March 14, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Not a lighthearted fun teenage book. Freshman students going to alchohol parties and sexual innuendo in the first couple of chapters...I quit reading and deleted from my kindle. I wouldn't want my teenager to read it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Appropriate for Young Teens March 16, 2014
By Lynn S.
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I sent this to my 14 year old granddaughter after reading the reviews. Her comment to me was she thought it might be like "Fifty Shades of Grey" (which she hasn't read but has heard comments about). This child is what I would call "pretty worldly" but her parents haven't allowed her to read this kind of book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average September 19, 2013

Just an average story about a year in the life of a freshman. Not much really happens... I kept reading hoping it would, but unfortunately it didn't come through for me. Maybe a good read if you are actually a freshman though(?).

I had more expectations before I start reading it and I was disappointed. There was some parts of the book that was very boring.
I did not try to read the others books of the series. Maybe they are better!!

What I Loved:

As pathetic as it sounds, I loved how a main character named Megan got the lovable nickname Meggie. So adorable!

It also must be said that Julie Prestsater writes so incredibly transparently that oftentimes I was reminded of my own journal I kept on and off through high school. I really felt like I was in Megan's head, and I could just feel her emotions so viscerally while reading her story.

What I Didn't Like:

Quite frankly, the "transparent" writing that I referred to aboveseemed a little too much like a teenager's journal at the beginning of the book. It felt as though I was constantly in this teen's head, hearing her every thought about what was happening and the people there, but with no real clue as to the story. This wore off probably 15% into the book, and I really did enjoy the rest of it.

Also, in that first 15% or so (and a little bit later, but it stopped bugging me so much) I really was stuck trying to figure out whether I felt like the character is "in high school" or " only 14." I think this is the first time I really felt old as a person- because the oldster in me had some issues with some of the happenings in Megan's life- saying that a 14-year-old shouldn't be thinking/experiencing this or that. When I thought of her as a "highschooler," though, all such censoring tendencies went away. Suffice it to say, if you have a problem with stuff that real teens do deal with- drugs, alcohol, and sex, you'd probably want to skip this book. But I don't advise that course of action at all.

My Overall Review

As stated earlier in the review, I did have some issues with this book. At some point, however, it turned into a page turner that I couldn't put down. Seriously.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Autumn Review's thoughts May 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
My Summary:
Megan is starting her freshman year off with a bang. She smart, popular, and knows how to fun. When she and her friends get invited to a Senior party, she meets Alex. Meg thinks she's found the guy of her dreams. The problem is, Alex wants Meg's friend Amy.

As Meg's freshman years goes on, she learns the tough reality of what life is like when you get to high school. Friendships change, there is more pressure from boys, and peer pressure becomes more difficult to avoid. Does Meg learn how to balance it all and can she get Alex to see her as more than a friend?

My Take:
I really flew through reading this book. What I liked the most about the story is that it deals with some very real high school situations. Meg had to learn that friendships change due to boys and other pressures like drugs. I think she had certain expectations on how things would be in high school and quickly learned that she couldn't determine the outcome.

Meg's character was easy to identify with. While the story does focus on the relationship she develops with Alex, it's really more about dealing with personal changes as you get older. Meg witnessed a friend doing drugs and another friend becoming sexually active. Those are both very real pressures in high school and I felt that Meg handled both situations maturely. She knew herself well enough to know she wasn't going to succumb to that pressure.

Overall, it was a pleasant read. As I said, I read it quickly and it held my attention. It's a great coming of age story for a YA reader. Adult readers would definitely identify as well. I'm interested to see how the series progresses. The series goes through each year of high school for Meg and the challenges she faces each year. I look forward to seeing how Meg and the gang manage their sophomore year!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hoping for a sequel June 18, 2009
Format:Paperback
Loved it! "So I'm a Double Threat" accurately chronicles the angst, distraction and experiences of a typical high school Freshman, Meg. The plot wasn't overly heavy, like Sarah Dessen's books tend to get. I sat down and read it straight through. There were a couple of times when I laughed out loud (haven't done that with a YA book in a while), especially the "lunch sack" part. That really took me back. I am looking forward to a sequel.

2.0 out of 5 stars Tried to like it..but just couldn't. January 15, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I saw great reviews of this bookk and was excited about reading it but it just didn't do it for me. The writing is very amateur and I could not get into the story. I feel like it could use some serious editing. I couldn't continue after 30 pages.
