Susan Egan is a remarkable Broadway talent who gets not NEARLY enough press. The tracks on "So Far..." show her range as a singer and entices the listener with a small taste what her stage performances are like ("Nothing" from A Chorus Line). Having discovered this marvelous performer via my nephew's continuous onslaught of Disney videos (She does the voice of Megera "Meg to my friends if I had any" in Disney's Hercules), I'm extremely pleased with this CD. I know it has a tune from "Bye Bye Birdie" but it WORKS (I just have a problem with that show...forgive me Susan!). The tracks from Cabaret ("Maybe This Time" and the title track) along with "I know Him So Well" from Chess (With Lisa Richard...another great singer) are extremely powerful. So if you like old-fashioned down to earth talent and show tunes, pick this baby up. Oh...and catch one of her live gigs...You won't regret it.

I met Susan Egan in 1990, when I was fortunate enough to be cast in the teen chorus at the Muny in St. Louis. It was Bye Bye Birdie, with Tommy Tune and Ann Reinking, and acted as a preview before it went on national tour (sadly, without me and the other teen chorus members!). I was blown away then by her talent, and was very excited to see that she'd released a CD. I like the fact that she's singing songs from musicals she's been in. So Far... has a good variety of newer material and classic Broadway fare.

I had the very good fortune to accidentally surf into Susan Egan's website (www.susanegan.net) several years ago and was so impressed with the site I sent her an email. Shortly there after I received a reply from Susan and was flabergasted. Since that day I have become a HUGE FAN and was lucky to see her perform live at the Orange County Performing Arts Center and the Laguna Playhouse, both in Orange County, California. I adore the songs she chose for this CD, perhaps because many of them are from my all time favorite Broadway shows, like THE FANTASTICKS, BYE BYE BIRDIE, HAIR and THEY'RE PLAYING OUR SONG!Susan and her friend Lisa Richard, who performs with Susan on I KNOW HIM SO WELL from CHESS, have both been blessed with beautiful voices and comedic flair that will have you smiling from ear to ear!

Susan Egan is without a doubt the most talented female Broadway performer today. She can sing high and belt it out, and every note is beautiful. I've seen her in every single role she's done, and she keeps getting better. These songs are the greatest choices to put on her debut album. Way to go, Susan!!!!

I am a bit of a showtunes fanatic and Susan Egan is slowing becoming my hero. Her voice can be soft and sweet or belty and brassy. I first came to hear of her through Beauty and the Beast, and every song I've heard since then has found its way into my collection. I have to say that my favorite song isn't on this CD and it saddens me a great deal. "Tell Him Anything" is be far the best song for Susan's voice. It really shows her deeper range and is a nice contrast to the up-tempo pieces like "Wonderful Guy", which I also love. Every song on "So Far..." is a gem, but to really get the full Susan Egan experience, check out her other recordings too. The "Beauty and the Beast" (the musical NOT the movie) soundtrack, "All That & More", "Triumph of Love", "Drat the Cat", "Bravo Broadway", "The Stephen Schwartz Album", "Sondheim at the Movies", "Cinderella", and many more. Best bet is to check out her AMAZING website at http://www.susanegan.net

Contrary to other reviewers, I appreciate her rendition of Maybe This Time. Some would say that it is completely inappropriate, "weak", or not "dirty" enough compared with other versions. However, one would really appreciate it if the song would be taken out from the show's context. Her version of Maybe This Time is quiet and surprisingly hopeful (listen to her attack on the last line...Maybe This time). One could hear the "levels" in her acting/singing. Some of the songs are enjoyable. However, most of them are relatively safe. It is a good thing that Susan Egan is an unpredictable singer. Just when I am sure she would fail to hit a note, she delivers, that is good enough. A singer who can pull-off the unexpected, not with the usual bravura (generic with most belters, especially broadway singers) but with honesty. A trait that separates belters from actors. I just wished she is the featured singer in the new version of Tell Me on a Sunday, that would have been nice.

I'm surprised that Susan Egan has not catapulted into eternal fame yet. She is amazingly talented, as evident on this album. Unlike most solo albums, Susan picks material that has meaning to her, and she sings the selecions with heart. Standouts include the beautiful "The Story Goes On", the hilarious "Nothing", the powerful "Cabaret", and her gorgeous duet with Lisa Richard, "I Know Him So Well". Susan also shines on classics like "A Wonderful Guy", "How Lovely To Be A Woman", and "Much More". I highly recommend this CD to anyone with an appreciation for beautiful vocal stylings. If this is where Susan Egan is so far, I cannot wait to see where she will go in the future.

This is a fantastic CD that showcases Susan Egan's beautiful, moving voice.I was fortunate enough to see her in NY doing Cabaret in 2000 (I was sitting at one of the "cabaret-style" tables on the floor). I still can't get her performance out of my mind. I saw Leah Thompson's version later, and I have to say that there was no comparison (sorry Leah). I am very happy to finally get at least 2 of her Cabaret songs on a CD. If Amazon runs out, they sell this CD at her website for not much more (and it is personally autographed).

It was almost impossible to pick up a copy of this CD in Toronto, until I finally found it at a venue that houses the Toronto Symphony Orchestra! Anyway, I'm more a fan of 'Susan The Actress' than 'Susan The Singer', and I'm not too familiar with Broadway themed CDs. They don't sit on my shelf. But this one does. The attractive, but modest Ms. Egan has the most distinctive voice: High and bright, and seemingly sung with a smile for the upbeat songs that make up most of the collection. Low and sultry for 'Sooner Or Later' and when backing her own vocals on 'Another Suitcase, Another Hall'. The way she she rolls her R's (except in the two Cabaret tunes... as the character of Sally Bowles, she SUPPOSED to be singing with a 'veddy' British accent!) And boy, she can really hold a long, final note. Lastly, the hilarious 'Nothing' from A Chorus Line made my eyebrows rise, hearing her let out a cussword or two in the most clear, sweet way. All in all, So Far... is gorgeously produced and orchestrated, and I recommend it to all who enjoys the musical theatre genre. And it may be a while, but I await Susan's proposed second, more mainstream album. |
