Paul Thorn has been pleasing crowds for years with his muscular brand of roots music - bluesy, rocking and thoroughly Southern, yet also speaking universal truths. The Tupelo, Mississippi native took an unexpected detour on the road to recording his latest album. After writing many discs of semi-autobiographical tunes, the critically acclaimed singer/songwriter - hailed as the "Mark Twain ... Read more in Amazon's Paul Thorn Store

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets! August 4, 2006
Format:Audio CD
All I can say to you is: now that you are here, don't hesitate to buy this. As good as he is on a studio album, he (and his band) are even better live. If you are familiar with him, most of the favorites are here. If not, you are in for a treat.

Although this is listed as an audio CD, this is, in fact, a DVD with a bonus CD. There are a few differences in the track listing for each, but all of the songs are golden. I prefer the DVD as you get to see him telling some of his (in)famous stories that go with the songs and see him and the band in action.

This is a keeper!

5.0 out of 5 stars Asronishing talent March 23, 2007
Format:Audio CD
My wife and I just caught Paul Thorn live (solo acoustic) opening for David Bromberg and The Angel Band (featuring David and his quartet backing up his wife's amazing a capella trio). Amazing, astonishing, inventive, and utterly charming. His songs are great - his stories even better. I was grinning like a fool through the entire performance and had a brief but thoroughly enjoyable chat with him during the set break. I listened to the CD on the drive dome and his sound with the band is quite different but every bit as enjoyable.

If you have a chance to see this man perform live - do it. In the mean time, if you enjoy great storytelling, strong southern blues, and rocking guitar work, pick up this DVD/CD. It's a great value and will be an often played addition to your library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the DVD alone. February 6, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I discovered Paul Thorn by accident in the fall of 2005 when he was opening for Huey Lewis. I have since acquired every bit of his music I can lay my hands on, and have seen him live once. The DVD gives a flavor of his live performances by including some of his many seems each song has a story.

Paul Thorn is an amazingly talented and versatile songwriter. He can make you laugh with songs like "Burn Down the Trailer Park" and "Viagra", then turn around and make you cry with "I Have a Good Day" and "Things Left Undone". Besides his skill with lyrics, the music is sometimes bluesy, sometimes country, sometimes rock. He can't really be categorized.

The CD contains many of his standards. If you have not been introduced to Paul Thorn, this combo set is an excellent place to start. You will find yourself checking his schedule on his website for an opportunity to see him live.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Special Performer September 3, 2006
Format:Audio CD
Paul Thorn is a man of many hats; a talented musician, singer, songwriter, stand-up comic & "inspirational leader" (oh, and a former boxer). Thorn and his talented band cruise through a fun set of bluesy rock, interjected by his good-spirited, often self-deprecating humor. Guitarist Bill Hinds proves equally adept at blistering blues-rock ("Heart With 4 Wheel Drive"), feather-light slide guitar a la Lee Roy Parnell ("Every Little Bit Hurts") and everything in between. Keyboardist Michael "Dr. Love" Graham adds a somber organ to the latter tune, & propels the energetic stomper "Mission Temple Fireworks Stand" with his rock'n'roll piano. The band lays down a wickedly funky groove on the deliriously silly "Ain't Love Strange", while the bouncy "Lover's Vacation" coasts along with carefree abandon.

A reocurring theme in Thorn's songwriting is, not surprisingly, the idea of continually getting back up after being knocked down, and the hope of better things ahead ("I'd Rather Be A Hammer Than A Nail", "Rise Up", "I Have A Good Day", "There's Something Out There"), which may further explain his charismatic appeal. He is a champion of the underdog who can relate to his audience, while not taking himself too seriously.

Don't make the mistake of thinking Thorn is simply a novelty act. He's an original artist who deserves to be discovered. And at this price, this CD/DVD package is a bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True American Original July 24, 2006
Format:Audio CD
Paul Thorn caught me totally by surprise a few years ago as an opening act when he came out with only his guitar and voice and wrapped the whole room around his finger. I caught him a couple of years later with his full band and it was a religious experience. I have attended thousands of live shows, starting in 1970, and I would put that show in my personal top 20! This DVD, with three solo songs and the rest with his amazing band, comes as close to capturing that feeling as video possibly can. The sound quality ranks with the finest concert recordings of all time. Paul has found the ultimate blend of rock, blues, gospel, classic R&B and country. He and this band sound like no one you have ever heard and that's exceedingly rare anymore. The DVD and bonus live CD are one the greatest values in recorded music you will ever find. You need to see this man's band live, but if you can't, buy this DVD and crank it up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Something For Nearly Every Taste April 28, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Though Paul Thorn has been recording for some time, I'd never heard of him until a friend with a knack for digging up obscure blues and Americana artists turned me on to him several months ago. On So Far So Good, Thorn covers a lot of musical territory: alt country, rock, blues, and even soul. Maybe the fact that he's from Elvis Presley's hometown of Tupelo Mississippi which is a sort of musical crossroads has something to do with his eclectic offerings and obviously disparate influences.
As far as live recordings go, this one is quite entertaining. On the DVD, Thorn intersperses his often autobiographical songs with amusing and ribald tales of his life growing up a working-class Southerner. Sometimes his self-deprecating humor infects his songs and I find his depictions of trailer-trash life to be very amusing. In any case, while the lyrical appeal may be limited to those who live the kind of life he sings about or who know of those who do, the musicianship is rousing and should please rockers and modern alt-country folks alike.
To my ears, the best cuts are A Lot of Good Reasons, Burn Down the Trailer Park, I Have A Good Day and Ain't Love Strange. Those who enjoy humorous lyrics should enjoy Hammer & Nail, Joanie The Jehovah's Witness Stripper, Mission Temple Fireworks Stand, and the hilarious acoustic cut I Guess I'll Just Stay Married. A short film called Fellow Americans that closes out the DVD gives the viewer a little more of an idea of what Paul Thorn is all about.
What makes this set such a great value is the inclusion of a CD containing sixteen mostly excellent songs, nine of which are also on the DVD. Of the songs only on the CD, That's A Lie is surely the best. So Far So Good: The Best of the Paul Thorn Band Live comes with a useful insert which contains DVD info and Thorn's musings on his fellow musicians. If you are new to the music of Paul Thorn, I can't think of a better introduction than this!
