Worth the Wait for This Release,
This review is from: So Fine (Audio CD)
This is one of the best cover albums of the 50's to 60's pop music period I've run across. I owned it on other media and have been waiting a long time for it to be released on CD. I wish that Loggins & Messina hadn't stopped with this one but applied their exceptional talents to other selections from that era as well. Particularly outstanding tracks are Hey Good Lookin, Chuck Berry's You Never Can Tell, Chris Kenner's I Like It Like That, and Bill Doggett's Honkey Tonk. If you like this music this CD is a must.

Contrary to another reviewer who received the wrong item, I got exactly what was represented & it's great to finally have this on c.d.! The lp replica packaging is superb. Sound quality is decent for period of original release (not an amazing remaster job I'd say). Only reason I wouldn't give five stars is just fairly decent sound quality and how short this album is - just about 34 minutes. Still one of my favorites though from Loggins & Messina.

First let me say for the record I'm a big Loggins and Messina fan so much so that I own all of their music in my collection.
I feel these two guys haven't really received their fair share of kudos and for the most part they have been unfairly overlooked and forgotten. However, this set really isn't their best work or even their best medicore work, but if you're a die hard fan like myself there are some hightlight moments and it deserves shelf space. If you're part of that large group of people who only remember their top-40 hits, "My Music" and "Your Mama Don't Dance" then this set is right up your alley. Kenny does a relaxed and soothing cover of "A Lovers Question." (Despite his 80's movie soundtrack sell out career choices he remains one of the great Pop/rock vocalist). "Lovers Question," highlights his pitch control, and makes you remember those Do Wop singers from the subways and big citys of the 1950's. Messina always leaned more towards the country rock side of things and his song choices are strong prehapes his best song featured here would be "Oh lonesome me." All in all for $15 or less this CD is a good fine, moreso if you're a collector like myself. This is the first time this set has ever been released in the United States, and the japanesse import is over priced at $35, (it's simply not that good). But if you don't already own any music by these guys don't start your collection with this one. If you're looking for something to sink you're teeth into try the first album titled, "Sittin In" and don't overlook "Mother Lode." All of the others including this one are just so-so with a few good moments here and there, but the first one and "Mother Lode" are the true Loggins and Messina classics. This one earns a 3-rating not bad but not anything to write home about either. |
