4.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff, but not his best, August 30, 2000

This review is from: And So it Goes. . . (Audio CD)
Sadly, we are only getting a restricted sample of Tilston's music through Amazon (and on this side of the Atlantic in general). His first album, "An Acoustic Confusion," came out in 1970 and was a really fine debut work; I understand it has recently been re-issued by a small label in Vermont. His best album overall, "Life by Misadventure," was released in 1986 (I think), and is filled with brilliantly written and performed songs of love, despair, and hope. Another album released a few years later ("Of Moor and Mesa") contains the piece "Slipjigs and Reels" later recorded by Fairport Convention. There is also a "greatest hits" package, and a recently released, and perfectly superb solo voice and guitar work called "Solorubato." And, for those who might enjoy his guitar work (he is a *very* good player, in the Davy Graham-Bert Jansch-Pierre Bensusan mold) there is a recently deleted instrumental cd called "Swans at Coole." Well--why can't we have all these available too? "And So It Goes" doesn't measure up to any of these, but even it rates a '4.' If you like first-rate guitar work and splendid interpretation of both traditional and original material, this very underrated and underexposed artist is your man. P.S.: Steve has his own website from which some of these earlier works can be purchased. Do it!
