While his two previous releases, Swiss Army Romance and The Places You Have Come to Feel The Most, have been staples of emotional acoustic rock, Chris Carrabba's (Dashboard Confessional) new EP is the apex of his career so far. Unfortunately a short collection of songs, these four tracks were recorded before his current headlining tour with his new back up band (members of Seville and indie rock legend Dan Hoerner of Sunny Day Real Estate).

In a personal preference, this CD shows Carrabba's depth and growth as a songwriter and lyricist. In his previous releases, he stuck with 2 main guitar tunings (Db sus2 and standard) and sung in a loud, declarative fashion. His lyrics, though descriptive and personal, never really deviated emotionally. On the new EP he has managed to expand his musical and lyrical depths. Songs such as "For You to Notice" and "Hands Down" demonstrate his new-found penchant for description and song writing skills. The addition of Dan Hoerner to the band has made a dramatic difference: Dan's presence allowed more depth in the music and a second guitar, bringing in a second melody line throughout most of the songs.

In short, it's my favorite Dashboard Confessional release to date. For the casual listener it's extremely catchy and easily his most accessible music to date, along with his best. Most fans should be satisfied with it and the new listeners will find this his most enjoyable piece of music to date. In short, pick this up.

5.0 out of 5 stars love story gone emo, May 28, 2005

A great 4 song love story... Seeing someone and wanting to get to know them, The anticipation of asking someone out and the excitement of getting to know someone. It captures the way you feel and worry about what to wear on the first date, and then the way it all comes into one perfect play. Just perfect.

I love the older stuff, it's the best because it's more of a time when their music could be played more how they wanted. ANd now that they've become more popular, their music sounds canned (a mark, a mission, a brand, a scar). If you like the older stuff like Swiss army romance, you'll love these acoustic songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars too amazing for words, June 6, 2004
This review is from: So Impossible (Audio CD)
this is by far the most amazing thing i have ever heard. i barely know how to say it. it's the first cd that ever made me cry. despite only being 15 minutes long, it's well worth it. remember to breath is such a beautiful song. each song perfectly captures the emotion of the four basic stages of starting a relationship:
1-you want them, they don't know you exist
2-they ask you out, you wanna know more about them
3-being overly nervious, first date jitters type thing
4-having the perfect date

wheather you're a long time fan or new to dc, this is a must have!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great concept, good execution, January 27, 2002
This review is from: So Impossible (Audio CD)
Chris Carraba is truly one of the great song writers of the indie scene today. He writes inspired, wonderfully emotional lyrics. His use of clever metaphors and vivid imagery make for truely unique songs. This example demonstrates his amazing lyrical talent. On the first listen, I didn't know how the songs were related. However on subsequent listens, I discovered the whole cd told the story his struggle to get a girl to go out with him. Every song adds elements to the story and you can't help but feel good when she calls him for a date. These songs convey a sense of optimism that was lacking on "The Places You've Come to Fear the Most". He writes with a maturity that belies his age, however writes about topics any teen can relate to. The excellent instrumentation seen in previous releases continues in this one. However I don't like the vocals as much. The EP lacks the backup vocals that added depth to the full length releases. Also, he tires to keep his voice unnaturaly low at some points. He doesn't use the full range of his vocal capabilities and lacks emotion. My only other problem is with Vagrant records, way to charge 10 bucks for a 4 song EP, also don't order from Vagrant. I ordered a mix cd five weeks ago and still havent got it. But this is another solid effort by Carraba.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Young Love, February 16, 2002

Tough to stomach in full-length mode where Chris Carraba's juvenile angst gathers epic histrionics, Dashboard Confessional flowers at EP length. So Impossible distills Carraba's virtues into one neat package. These 4 tracks, an addendum to last year's The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most, are thoughtful, delicate, felt. His bad relationship a memory, you can hear Carraba falling in love again, slowly in "For You to Notice" and the title track, cautiously in "Remember to Breathe", with wild abandon in "Hands Down". For those who've given up on young love, here's where you can remind yourself of all its craziness and caprices.

4.0 out of 5 stars My First Dashboard CD, But Not My Last!, June 19, 2004

Wow! My friends told me Dashboard was good, so I went and picked up this CD. It is expenisve for just 4 songs, but its worth not having to keep skipping tracks you don't like.

For You To Notice-5/5, excellent. a little slow at the beginning but it doesn't bother me!

So Impossible-5/5,a masterpiece. This song blows me away! Its more upbeat than the 1st track, which makes it all the better.

Remember to Breathe-4/5-good, but not great. His voice isn't as good in this song, but the rythym and lyrics are good.

Hands Down-5/5, one of my all-time favorite songs. Simply amazing. Don't take my word for it, listen yourself!

Overall it is an amazing CD! this won't be the last I get from DC. I would give it 5 stars if it was cheaper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dashboard is Genius, March 31, 2003

I had never heard of Dashboard Confessional until a friend got me a copy of "The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most". I was amazed at how much I loved that CD. At first I just liked the calming sound, then I started paying closer attention to the Lyrics and the poetry came through. All of the songs just made sense to me. As I started thinking about it I realized that the artist was just saying what was on his mind. The focus isn't so much on putting on a "good show", it was genuine and sincere. He may not be the greatest singer, but you don't notice that when you are listening, you can just hear the emotion in his voice. When it comes to Dashboard, it's all about the lyrics and the emotions behind them, not just some generic cookie-cutter, wannabe act. Dashboard is not only the real thing, Dashboard is Genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING THAT CHRIS CAN FIND HAPPINESS, January 15, 2003

this album....man, what can i say? if you've had a chance to purchase this album, you will agree that it is a damn good buy, and worth the money (even though it is only 4 songs). Also, if you have heard the unplugged album, you may have heard these four songs played with a full band. personally, i think that the full band to these songs enhances it and also stunts its genuis. "Hands Down" sounds amazing with a full band (especially the racing drum beats mike marsh pumps out), Also "for you to notice" has an excellent drum beat that reminds me of an 80's pop song, but still effective in its own right. the other two songs "Remember to Breathe" and "So impossible" i think are more effective when they are sang solo. If you are thinking about picking this album, DO IT! its a brilliant tale of love that only chris carrabba could capture.

5.0 out of 5 stars A happy journey, September 28, 2002
By
This review is from: So Impossible (Audio CD)
I like this CD because the 4 songs together tell a wonderful story. From begining to end, this CD is lyrically great and it simply makes me happy. This CD varies a bit from other dashboard CD's because its lyrics are more upbeat, so to speak. It's still real emotional though, espically when he sings things like, "do you, do you like dreaming of things so impossible?" The thing I like the most though, is the CD's story of boy meets girl and how the relationship develops from there. It really paints a good picture of how we're all excited and nervous and anxious right when we meet someone we really dig.

Acoustically wonderful and lyrically driven, I would highly recomend this CD.
