5.0 out of 5 stars You'll never take THIS one to the resale shop!
The CD Outlaws/Hughie Thomasson fans have been waiting almost 20 years for has arrived. 11 cuts, a mixture of rock-tinged country, country-tinged southern rock and straight ahead hot-rockin' flame-throwin' guitar rock. A couple of the cuts (Dancin' Shoes, Mr. Cowboy) are a notch below the others, but the rest of the CD makes you forget about it quickly. You can hear...

2.0 out of 5 stars Winner of the Truth In Adverstising Award
The album's called So Low, and it's hard to imagine anything sinking lower. Okay, it's more of a Hughie Thomasson solo album than an Outlaws album, and it's better than Los Hombres Malo and Soldiers of Fortune, but there's little here to warrant repeated listening.

"Three Alarm Fire" and "Surrounded by One" have some energy, and they try hard to harken back...

You can hear the influence he's picked up playing with Skynyrd, especially on "Hearts Run Wild". If you're a fan, and listen carefully, you will hear subtle hooks and riffs from almost EVERY Outlaws album, carefully crafted into the music. The result is music that's new and vibrant, yet hauntingly familiar to a fan. It's kind of fun listening for them, and then trying to remember which song on which album you heard it on before. One example: The lead guitar "Surrounded By One" is strongly reminicient of "Soldiers of Fortune" or "A Real Good Feelin'". Listening to this CD is like putting on your favorite pair of jeans - it just FEELS right.

For someone who's never heard the Outlaws or Hughie before, here's the CD in 30 words or less: Gordon Lightfoot ditches his acoustic axe and plays Skynyrd-type tunes with a smokin' Stratocaster, steel and slide guitars, harmonica, organ, and fiddle. Awsome harmonies, tight sound.

I'd give this CD 10 stars if I could. If there was any real promotion behind this CD, it would be on the Billboard top 100. My picks for "singles"? "Three Alarm Fire", "Surrounded By One", and "Only Love Will Do". Even the price is great! Order now, you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars At Long Last, The Return of The Outlaws, April 18, 2000

Fans of the southern rock group, The Outlaws will take heart in the fact this release is a return to the sound we all know and love, Guitar driven southern rock with smooth vocals. Hughie Thomasson has once again proven he is a master craftsman. A bit of Skynyrd, Eagles and Country are blended together in "So-Low". I wondered if the title is a subtle in-joke, Hughie has talked about a solo release for years, but why ponder this? buy it...listen to it, you will not be dissapointed. Thank You Hughie, we love you!

5.0 out of 5 stars Return to form, April 12, 2000

Classic Hughie and Outlaws here. Many songs have that country rock feel of the early Outlaws but with a new sound. Great mix of Ballads and rockers. Maybe the best since Hurry Sundown. Fantastic guitar work by the fender legend! Great remake of the classic song "Dancin' Shoes." If you are an Outlaws fan, it doesn't get much better than this. Buy it now!

I was glad to discover this CD. If it was promoted it would be a big hit with Outlaw and Hughie fans. A good mix of country and rock and roll. By far the strongest effort in years by Hughie and some fine musicians. I particular like Ghost town and Lover's Serenade and the catchy tune South Street. With driving guitars, good song writing Hughie's distinct voice, it has that unmistakable original Outlaws sound. Reminds me of the original release back in the 70's. This is a must buy selection for any Outlaws fan. Buy it and you'll have no regrets.

I must admit, I have been a fan for as long as I have been familiar with this band, but I am also a journalist who writes objective reviews for several publications. When I found this CD, it was a treasure. The title track from Diablo Canyon and the Hittin' The Road LIVE CD gave me hope that Hughie and the/some boys would ride again and they sure did. Ghost Town grabs you by the hair in the first minute. Three Alarm Fire is a syncopated panic, leaving you breathless as it changes pace throughout. South Street recalls the Lady In Waiting record so much. Hughie is in top voice, plays great and his "new outlaws" band does not let us down. I saw the new group a few times and enjoyed most of what they did. I miss Billy and hard-headed Henry Paul as well as Freddie Salem. But this CD is more that I ever expected for a hired gun who is now having Lynyrd Skynyrd pay his bills now.

This is what Old Outlaw Fans have been craving..new music from the most under appreciated American Guitarist of his generation...A nice mix of rockers, ballads and some revved-up country..If you liked early Outlaws, this is one you should get..In fact, buy two and dare your local radio station to play a couple of cuts like: Ghost-Town,Three-Alarm Fire & A Wish..Long live the Outlaws.. Leitrim

Wow, finding this and discovering all the OUTLAWS catologue all in one week is a bit much. The gain here is an exellant album that is from the relatively recent past. Mssr. Thomasson and friends have done a fine job of writing and producing a great album that holds up to anything done by the Outlaws or a southern rock in general. More hooks here than JoeBob's tackle box!!

I have to admit, Hughie has done a great production of this one. He never did like the studio, thought it took away from the raw energy of the road during the Hurry Sundown to Playin' to Win period but he's produced a great, familiar, traditional Outlaws sound. Like other fans have mentioned, I hope it is the start of something that they owe us fans and themselves which is a Tribute to Billy Jones. As many of the living, breathing past members there still are (Harvey, Dave, Monte, Freddie, even Henry Paul)they should get back together for Billy and call it North of Texas Dreams. Arista also owes the fans a box set on these guys with every track and rare live performances. Not these go between Greatest Hits compilations that say, 'Here you go, see ya later', Hell....there should be a lot of quality live stuff to include...Let's hope there's more to come fellow Outlaws fans...I know I'll have a Lady in Waiting...

4.0 out of 5 stars Hughie's First Solo Album, March 30, 2000
This review is from: So Low (Audio CD)
This is a must have album for Outlaws fans. This is more for a Hughie Thomasson Hughie solo album than an Outlaws album. HT uses the band from Diablo Canyon here. This mix of songs is has a little country to it which is great to see a different side from Hughie. There are some great songs here! Check out, "South Street", "Ghost Town" and "Lovers Gold And Fools". Look for the Outlaws to come out with a new album soon. WT.
