Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this riff on the Mother Goose tale about the old woman in the shoe, a family of 26 bunny children whose names all begin with a different letter in the alphabet are used to teach ABCs and 1, 2, 3s. "The artwork is chock-full of cozy details and possesses a Victorian flair," wrote PW. Ages 3-8.

From School Library Journal

PreS?Old Mother Rabbit lives in a shoe, but unlike her famous predecessor, she knows exactly what to do with her 26 offspring. After feeding them broth and carrots, she puts them all to bed in some rather strange places, leading readers through her house and garden as well as the alphabet: "1 was named Abel. He slept on the table. 2 was named Blair. She slept in a chair." The repetition of the exact same phrasing may get a little tiresome for adults reading aloud, but children will enjoy guessing where each rabbit sleeps. The napping places range from the fairly ordinary (chair, pillow) to the whimsical (trike, sink, trellis, bowl). The large, soft watercolor illustrations of cuddly bunnies, each with a distinct personality, will carry well in a group and are rich with clever details: carrot wallpaper, bunny dolls, and rabbit-shaped bedposts. The final two-page painting, in which all of the youngsters hop into bed with their mother, provides children with the opportunity to guess which bunny is which. Comforting and cozy, this attractive title is a good choice for pajama storytimes.?Dawn Amsberry, Oakland Public Library, CA

More About the Author

Rick Walton first thought of writing for children when his high school English teacher, Joyce Nelson, told him that a story he had written for the class would make a good children's book. But it wasn't until after he had dabbled in business, law, teaching, software design, and almost every other career in the book, he finally realized that writing for kids was one of the few things that he both enjoyed and was good at. Since then Rick has had over ninety books published. His works include picture books, riddle books, activity books, mini-mysteries, a collection of poetry, and educational and game software. His books have been featured on the IRA Children's Choice list, Reading Rainbow, and on CBS This Morning. Rick teaches university courses on picture book writing and on the children's book publishing industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Look, look! A good book! August 9, 2007
Format:Paperback
I'm such a sucker for rhymes. Fortunately, so are my kids. There's nothing like a story with pleasant and soothing rhymes to get them off to sleep quickly (giving me more time to write reviews :D) See, there's an Old Mother Rabbit who lives in a shoe. She has 26 children (those rabbits sure know how to multiply!) but she definitely knows what to do. The tale travels through the alphabet -naming each bunny and where they fall asleep (1 is named Abel, he slept on the table.....and so on) My kids delighted in guessing where each little bunny would sleep (some places were pretty strange - like who could fall asleep in candy???) It also taught them words they don't normally use (e.g. lane, holly, kettle). Counting, the alphabet, and rhyming.... all in one sweet little bedtime story. What more could a parent ask for - besides children who beg to go to bed?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rhyming, ABC And Counting Board Book! August 29, 2004
By KSL
Format:Board book
I love this book and the illustrations are beautiful! But the book does not end there, it contains counting, the alphabet AND rhyming!

Here in Florida one of the tasks Kindergarten children should know how to do before going on to 1st grade is to be able to rhyme! And one of the easiest ways to start is to rhyming with the child's own name!

I also like that this mother did know what do to do with her children and seems much happier than the Old Lady in the Shoe ever was or felt!

Great little bedtime story. Not too short. Not too long. Hubby likes to add his own rhymes when he reads it. It can get pretty silly. One of our favorites and a great gift.
