3.0 out of 5 stars DARK METAL WITH ATMOSPHERE
This band is great all around from fast-drumming,good metal vocals, and decent guitar solos. This CD has all that and more. I finally purchased their CD ...AND SO THE NIGHT BECAME and was pretty impressed. Though this isn't really "black" metal, it's got enough influence to be classified as that. No, it's more like "dark" metal, meaning it's a whole lot more evil than horrible little bands like Dimmu Borgir or Cradle of Filth. ...And so the Night Became has some death qualities to it meaning it's pretty brutal at times, and peaceful and beautiful at other times. This is a long CD, about an hour long, yet it doesn't seem to drag at all. There's so much diversity on this album it's incredible. Standout songs are "There's no wine like the blood's Crimson", "Warrior of the Cresent Moon", and "...And so the Night Became". You definitely need to get this album, and may i also suggest "Shadows of Old" and the new "Ascension's of Terror".

5.0 out of 5 stars This Album is Incredible, December 15, 2000

...And so the Night became is a breath of fresh air. For the past 4 months I had been listening to nothing but Brutal Death and it was taking it's toll on my hearing and i was just getting sad in general over the music being the same everyday. That was until i found this. I opened it and looked through the booklet before actually listening. The Lyrics are like verses from mystical tales...great stuff, and the girl, whatever her name is,is pretty. ..Then i put off my lights and just lay down in bed and listen to this straight through 3 times! yeah! and this CD is over an hour long! That's how good it is. Track 3,Warrior of the Cresent Moon may very well be my favorite song ever. I plan on getting all the other albums from this band, Aeternus. Do yourself a favor and purchase this dark masterpiece before just getting another death metal CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent black/doom, April 10, 2000

This album is incredible. 75% electric 25% acoustic. The songwriting is outstanding. This is as good as it gets. A classic black metal album. The guitars on this album show many different kinds of emotion. They can be dark, sad, angry, happy, all in the same song. Don't let the fact that this album has some acoustic guitar turn you off. This is truly epic black metal. I don't even like black metal and I love this cd. It's too bad so many people haven't heard of this band because they're right up there with the greats like In Flames, Arch Enemy, At the Gates, and Children of Bodom.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Aeternus Album!, March 1, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: & So the Night Became (Audio CD)
Well, maybe the best along with "Beyond the Wandering Moon", I love them both so much. Anyway, on to the music. Aeternus is a rather obscure "dark metal" (as Aeternus calls it) band from Norway. Their music is full of folk influences without getting to corny. Ares is one of the best guitarists ever, especially on tracks like "As I March" and "and So the Night Became". I'm rather glad this band isn't all popular like Dimmu Borgir because when that happens, the band sells out. (Just listen to "Stormblåst" and then "Spiritual Black Dimensions") However, Aeternus's newest, "Shadows of Old" took a step away from the folk, acoustic, dark metal sound and entered a more death-y realm. That is good, and anyone who likes this should buy "Shadows of Old". But this is better. Enter the cold realms of Aeternus. Buy this or "Beyond the Wandering Moon". You will be blown away by freezing winds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow...., October 22, 2000

This may very well be the most perfect album ever made. The intro is a bit lackluster, but it's far more winding and morose than is the norm for black metal. I like how they do the tribal drum thing for a while, then you hear the sound of falling rain, and then a thick layer of heavily distorted guitars rips into you with the force of a steamroller. Aeternus has the heaviest, most crushing guitar sound of any black metal band I've ever heard. Awesome. The drums are flawless, but the real focus of this album has to be the guitars. Simply amazing. Aeternus is simply crushing, and yet, they use more acoustic guitars in one album than most black metal bands use in their whole careers. I just love the medieval sounding acoustic track that closes out the album. Bottom line is, if you're looking for a really obscure black metal band that should be far more popular than they are, then get this cd. It doesn't disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Folk dark metal, June 12, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: & So the Night Became (Audio CD)
Aeternus shows more mature songwriting from Beyond the Wandering Moon on this album. Folk/classical guitar melodies often introduce the incredibly death metal-like riffs that become fairly predictable but still enjoyable after a few songs. The riffs used seem to rely upon folk/celtic phrasing that resolve into a death metal style violence sometimes. However, most of these songs do not intend to slam the listener upside the head with brutality. Instead, melody and a droning atmosphere is developed with Vrdrok pounding away in the background. One word to describe this atmosphere would be "spiritual." Technicality nor image are not the aims of this band. That in itself is unique considering the world black metal scene. The message of Aeternus matches quite strongly with the feeling that this album conveys. It's somewhat surprising that a band so focused on developing such atmosphere moved onto death metal. All in all, a very rewarding listen provided that one is not anticipating total melodic or straightforward black metal.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best CDs I have in my collection, February 23, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: & So the Night Became (Audio CD)
Okay, I guess this would fit into the definition of "female atmospheric metal" but still appease the Darkthrone fan as well. This CD is NOT ugly like Darkthrone, but it still retains everything that makes bands like Darkthrone great. As I March is probably my favorite on the album, one of my favorite black metal songs ever, and definately the best "female atmospheric metal" I have ever heard. The slow parts flow as smooth as black metal gets, and the fast parts just "howl at the moon" with intensity. I also picked up "The Burning Shroud" and "Beyond the Wandering Moon" both of which are also excellent, but none compare to this. Don't let the words "female atmospheric metal" scare you. This CD is primal, and nothing like Cradle of Filth, Covenant, etc. It is not primitive, and a girl plays in the band, which is why it sorta fits into the definition of "female atmospheric metal", but it is still extreme as hell.

Lyrics are of course in the "evilwarblackmetalforestmoonworship" vein, but are still very well done, and avoid major cheese. It is also interesting to hear a female perspective on real black metal since the genre is flooded with males (or terrible bands with females). Unlike Cradle and Covenant, Morrigan actually contributes to the lyrics and music, so you do get a taste into the mind of the 'true' female black-metaller.

Is it raw? Nope. Is it 'true'? Hell yeah!!
