Something to tide you over,

If you are like me, "Oh, Inverted World" has been in our near your cd player since it came out. For those of us who can't quite wait till "Chutes To Narrow" comes out, this is a interesting taste. "So Says I" is a different direction for the band, more rock (in the vein of Olivia Tremor Control) and while Mercers lyrics still have an obtuse melancholy that I love, the content leans much more toward the political than emotional. "Mild Child," which is not going to be on the next album, is similar to songs like "Your Algebra" and "Weird Divide" with a interesting sound collage thing going on at the end. WARNING: There is a door knocking sound on "Mild Child" that sounds so realistic that I checked my door 3 times before I realized it was in the song (kind of makes you feel you are 60.) Lastly, "Gone for Good" is an alternate version of a song on the upcoming album that was put out on their website (with video!) and I love it, much like "Pressed in a Book." It is only 4 dollars and more than worth it IMHO. Can't wait for the album.

Bands grow on you, and that exactly what has happened wit the Shins. I 1st started listening to them when i heared one of there songs on the "Scrubs" Cd. They are now my favorite band. Chutes to narrow is a great cd, that has a little more of an electronic feel then Inverted World. It is possibly the best single i have ever had. I cant wait for the album.

If you are a true fan, then this CD is worth the money just for the second track "Mild Child". Of course, if you live in Japan you probobly got this as a bonus release. If you are like myself, you like to collect the full recordings of an artist to fully understand their work; this single is no exception. The Shins have only two albums out at the time of writing, and the third is on its way so if you are antsy as well pick up this single and the few others floating around and love the anti-album tracks as an extension of their creative genius. Whew, just buy it!

My brother is right.,

My brother wrote the first review here. I thought I would chime in and back him up. I have more of an electronic taste, but the very same un-dying love for this rock group. The lyrics can be followed the same as poetry, and the compositions are strange and compelling. The tracks on this single are all of high quality.

"So Says I" is a bit quirky, which is what I love about it."Gone for Good" sounds a lot like Uncle Tupelo / John Fogerty with a Shins twist, which I really dig! Mild Child is a beautiful song, although expect to be melancholy after playing it. Swirling melodies and subliminal synth add a wonderful counterpoint to the steadily strummed acoustic guitar. The title track is glorious and strongly reminds me of Zumpano reborn. Buy it!!!

So says "Shins",
This review is from: So Says I (Audio CD)
The downbeat innocence of the Shins is what is most appealing about them, and that feeling pervades the single of "So Says I." Included is the title song, an alternate version of another Shins melody, and the unreleased-except-in-Japan "Mild Child."The title track is from the Shins' sophomore album "Chutes Too Narrow: a richly melodic rant ("In our darkest hours/we have all asked for some/angel to come/sprinkle his dust all around..."). Nice solid stuff, though hardly their best. "Mild Child" is a pretty, slow melody. And the alternate version of "Chutes"'s "Gone For Good" has a more countryish feel. The sweet, harmonious music of the Shins can mask anger, depression, or just plain weirdness. They're in pretty good form in "So Says I"; each song is pleasant but not outstanding, including the twangier "Gone" and swirling, slightly peculiar "Child." It's a more rock-based single, rather than the electro-indiepop sound the Shins are known for, and it's a fairly good departure. "So Says I" is a pleasant but unexciting diversion for the Shins fan. An interesting look at a few odds and bits from this talented indie band.

1957?,

The Shins weren't around in 1957 and I'm pretty certain that they haven't recorded any songs called "Eat my shin" or "I Gotta Take a Shin," (and we can be grateful for that fact), but they have recorded a lot of great music in the last few years and this EP contains some of it. Buy it and enjoy...it only costs a few bucks.
